I am having second thoughts on a company I am using. Bought the house with a crap Maytag/Nordyne 3 ton unit which is 3-4 years old. The coil was leaking so we paid them $1700 to install replacement. Nordyne changed the part and now for whatever reason it is not compatible. 2 coils later and they want to install an American Standard 14 seer. Want me to pay $5100 plus the $1700 I already gave them for a total of about $7000. Also when the owners helper or whatever did the first coil he didnt glue the drain pipes properly and it dumped 3 gallon of water through the ceiling and onto the wood floors. He promises to fix it after. Just having second thoughts. Im in the Metairie area

I saw someone on a thread from the OT last week recommend Nu-air in Mandeville. The guy is coming out tomorrow. Thinking of going with Goodman

Why would the coil not be compatible?

There must be more to this story.

From what I found online nordyne replaced the part # with a different part because the coils were leaking after 2-3 years. They changed it to a microchannel coil. For some reason air is not flowing through the new coil. The AC guy said they sent him the wrong part at first. He got the "right one" sent and it's performing the same.not enough air flowing through it. I'm not an expert on the different types of coils but a Google search gave me the info on the company switching the type of coil. The AC guy assumed they sent him wrong part. Obviously there might be some sort of way to make it work but he obviously doesn't know how and neither do I.

Get rid of nordyne ASAP. Fought that piece of crap for 5 years before replacing the entire system with a Heil. Went through a compressor and 2 coils in that time

I have the same exact unit, 4 ton American standard 14 seer AND all my ductwork replaced for 6100$. Used a guy from slidell where I live and couldn't be happier. Shows up on time or early, does great and honest work for a fair price. Not sure if he goes to Metairie but if you want I can give you his #

One of my best friends owns an AC company, he can put whatever he wants on his house and he went with a Goodman.

I would avoid Goodman. Believe it or not, American Standard has the best reliability based on consumer reports 3 year and 5 year break down rate surveys for both heat pumps and traditional AC units.

Trane/American Standard right now is top dog. They are also one of the most expensive. They also benefit from making sure their installers are decently competent.

One reason Goodman gets a bad rap is they allow anyone to buy their equipment. That leads to a lot of shite installs and subsequently a higher rate of problems. They still are on the lower end of the quality spectrum but aren't as bad as some people make out.

I believe there is a lot to this, so if you don’t know your installer, probably best to avoid Goodman, particularly if you are basing your decision on competitive bid prices. Just my opinion. But the flip side of that is cost. If you can get a Goodman for half the price and they currently have an exceptional warranty and you’re willing to risk the inconvenience of a failing system in the middle of the summer, that may not be a bad choice for you.

Interestingly, last time a price dunits (long time ago) Carrier and Bryant were far and away the most expensive.

Definitely not looking for the cheapest. I am trying to get something very efficient.

A 14 seer is much more efficient than what I had. BUT the newer variable speed motors that are like 22 seer are much more efficient. You're gonna pay for it though. I put that American standard 14 seer 4 ton in my home with all new ducts and it cut my cleco bill from 380 to 200$ in summer. That's with 30+ yr old windows too.

I've been in my house for 8.5 years now.

There has not been one year that I haven't had to have something fixed on at least one of the units. Most of the time it's two.

The smallest unit had a hole in the coils and won't hold freon. I will replace it this winter. No way in hell would I go back to goodman. I called them and asked about helping me out on the coil but they didn't even want to talk about it. I wasn't asking for much just anything. 10%, $100 something. Nope.

You'd think a company would look kindly on a customer with 3 damned units on their house, but they don't.

Never again.

2nd guy recommends a 3.5 ton Trane 16 seer, right over 6k installed. Waiting on the next guy.

You might as well file a claim with your insurance for the water damage while you are at it. That guy won't be fixing jack when you kick him to the curb.

Where are you located, I can give a rec in the Lafayette area.

ETA: just reread the OP and saw you’re in the Metairie area. No clue on AC contractors there.
