Car insurance adjusters, need help

This morning, my son hit a deer. The shop called in said the damage is more then what the car is worth.
Shop said it is worth $4475. The damage is over 7K. I'm sure the insurance company will total it.
How far off will they try to not pay if it is total?
How do you go about asking them to buy the car back. Hell, he could part out the car and make a little money, maybe. He bought this cat new. It is a 2000 mustang, very clean and loaded. Both airbags popped on his arse and the deer almost came in the car thru the windshield.

Did he get the backstraps?

if damage equals 75% of value, totalled by law. Get on KBB.com and other websites, print out value with all options, demand that. Ask to keep salvage.

Would of been a nice 8 pointer. Easy 175 lb deer and yes, backstraps are good.
He bought that car new when he got out of highschool. Needed something to get good mileage at the time. He is looking for a jeep or a small 4x4 truck. He didn't need a truck or 4x4. Always came and got Dad's.

Let the adjuster know you're interested in keeping.
They should be using something like CCC, NADA, or Mitchell (with JD Power backing) to run the numbers on YOUR car. I don't think any company uses KBB for determining values on autos.
If you retain the salvge, usually they'll find what similar cars are being sold for at salvage, then deduct that from the total price of the car. Also, the state will issue a salvage title on the car if you keep it. Once fixed, you'll need to get it inspected and have a reconstructed title issued.
Most companies will not put comp/coll on a reconstructed car. Furthermore, should he be totaled again, it won't be evaluated using retail #s.
ETA, don't go around demanding this or that.

You try your best to tell a 17 year old what he should be buying.
He is ok. Sore shoulder and got a bunch of the dust that comes out the airbags in his eyes.
Deer in the back of my truck.
Car killer.
Car.
A lot more damage.

The state set that deer up to get a closer look at his inspection sticker. Was an officer waving an ear of corn on the other side of the road?

I would give this very careful thought.
A salvage Mustang isn't worth a lot and will be tough, if even possible, to get full coverage insurance.
A car hit that hard has a lot of problems.

No. Deer was full of beans. Not fat at all.
If he bought the car from the insurance company, he would part it out. Would cost way to much to repair. Just the airbags are almost 2K. Hell, the tires are a couple months old that cost him $700.

Headlights, bumper cover, radiator support?, motor mounts?, fenders, windshield, paintwork, airbags, plus a lot of stuff you don't know about.
A 14 year old Mustang...

Ahh, OK.
That may be a plan.

It has the V6. Tops out at 129 mph. Well, that was the fastest I went with it.

Yep. Just take the total loss figure if it is close to KBB or NADA. Then make an injury claim to get him a little more to buy something else.

Damn, that a good deer.
Just tell the adjuster you are interested in buying the car back. Not a big deal at all. They have to sell it to someone and they'd just assume sell it to you.

Can't do that in your own car, and .
