I did some searching around but didn't find a whole bunch of info and was curious if anyone ever used buzzbaits for reds. I've used inline spinners before and bought all the stuff to make my own and bought a few buzz blades as well and made a couple inline buzz baits to try out this weekend.

I'm sure the reds will crush those

I've used regular ole lunker lures and caught reds. They'll eat pretty much anything.

Jenny's Jigs makes a good buzz bait for Reds. They hold up well.

They will definitely take a buzz bait, use a stinger hook, they tend to short strike them or miss them a lot.

I'll try them out with these hooks first and see how they work out, trying to keep them sorta-weedless.

Finally took the leap, huh? You're gonna crush em. (It feels good catching them on something you made yourself.)

I recommend H&H cocahoes for the lures. The hook sits flush with the fin on top of the lure and gives the hook a little more protection from grass.

ETA: For the weighted spinners, I avoided weighted hooks and put barrel weights on the actual wire. Didn't like having to jam that weighted section through the plastic every time I wanted to change bait. Food for thought.

Springlocks man. Way mo betta.

Baits look good dude. Like someone else said though, expose your hook a bit. Those fish will short strike that bait a lot. I've had very good luck with buzzbaits with redfish in the past, but I hardly ever use them.

What's a "short strike"?

I bought a wire former too, so any cost savings to myself pretty much just went out the window. I'm interested in trying that buzzbait though and will give it a shot Saturday and Sunday.

I might make a few with brass beads and weightless hooks and see how the Gulp swim mullets work on them. I've never had any issues with the weighted hooks and other plastics but the Gulps are so soft they'd always just fall apart.

I've put the hook the same on inline spinners in the past and never had issues with short strikes. I'm going to run the buzzbaits in my R&D test tank(the pool) and see how they look. I'm a bit concerned about short strikes on those since they'll be higher in the water but we'll see how it goes.

I used heavy wire(.045) and the pliers just weren't cutting it. With a little practice I can now make loops look like I know what I'm doing.

Gotcha. I use thin wire (.026 I think) and it's easily managed by the pliers.

Bump this thread with your first catch on your homemade bait.

I was talking about the buzzbait, not the spinners.

A short strike is when a fish hits your bait but doesn't eat it completely. Redfish do it a lot to topwater baits because they like playing with their food/headbutting/torturing it prior to ending its life. Nihilists, man. Really though, they have to come all the way out of the water or roll to eat topwaters because their mouths are basically the same as their chins. Thus, mucho short strikes.

Same experience with short strikes. They are bottom feeders, so it's difficult for them to get top water in their mouth. Causes some intense blow ups though. I've had quite a few redfish hit a buzz bait and don't know if I've ever got one in the boat. Gave up on it after a while. For some reason I don't have as much trouble with a top dog. I assume it's the tremble hooks making the difference.

The paddle tails you had will certainly work with the buzz bait however I would also suggest considering something in the form of a crab. Redfish are predominately feeding on crabs back in the marsh, at least where I grew up.

I would consider trailing your prop with something like this, the profile will get their attention:
