Most of the answers are going to be "oh, I own this one and its without question the best" as you have already seen.
Go try out a few and see what fits the best. In your price range you likely won't find a gun with shims to help fit the gun to you.
Shoulder the gun with your eyes closed. When on your shoulder open your eyes and look down the barrel. Do it several times. If the gun fits your eyes will be aligned with the beads and rib
I will add that I am not a fan of Remington now. They just don't seem to make the product that they use to make. If you can fine a good used one go for it though.

Were you shooting a pump or a semi-auto?
Pumps are going to be cheaper, but will provide slower follow up shots, which is t always a bad thing for a new shooter. That's the first place I would start. If you were shooting semi-autos and that's what you want to go with, you may have to go used.
For a value semi-auto within your price range, check out Franchi.

I shot a semi-auto yesterday, but I want to go with a pump for a buy.
Appreciate all the info! I will keep doing my research on all the ones suggested.

Do not get the 870 express! I have had nothing but problems with mine. The 870 express is not the same quality as the old 870's that got the gun such a good reputation.

For bird hunting, (any kind) I bought a 12 gauge Mossberg Silver Internatioal over/under. Love it. New in the box with an extra set of chokes is $650. Took a gobbler with a 10" beard a week ago with it. Looking forward to dove season
