I've been throwing around the idea of buying a camp in the next couple of years. I will retire soon from the military and will move back to south La. I want to get opinions from the OB on if its worth owning, leasing, or just not a good idea all together. My ideal location would be around the Theriot/Cocodrie area. I'll hang up and listen.

Dont know that area in particular, but think it is well worth it if its an area you want to spend time. Not sure I would buy before I moved though, because of up keep.

Where would you live?

In reality, how much do you think you would actually use the camp?

Are you retiring from work or do you plan on having a job?

Kids?

Well, my wife and I haven't decided yet on a town/area. I guess it depends on our jobs and schools available. I own some land above Folsom on Hwy 450. I don't know if I want to live there. We both have family in the Houma and surrounding areas. As far as using the camp, I would say just about every weekend to every other weekend. The kids love when we take leave to visit and spend time down there fishing.

Yes is always the answer. Maybe go in with someone so that it is used often and the grass is mowed.

Make sure you figure all of your costs before you go through with it. Check with someone who has a camp in that area. There are always hidden costs.

Insurance will be high as hell in that area.

If you'll be retired and can afford it, go for it. Nothing like owning your own. You can up and go whenever you want and do whatever you want to make it exactly how you want it. It can be your own little paradise.

On the flip side you have to worry about theft, vandalism, upkeep, hurricanes, and a bunch of other shite.

I would say go for it. BUT, Slickback is right. There are always hidden costs that can add up real fast.

Hasn't been much of a problem this Winter. I think it has only reached freezing twice this Winter.

I own a camp and wouldn't have it any other way. I would reccomend it to anyone. As others have said it's not all a "dream" deal.

You have to keep up with it, mowing grass, upkeep, and then Feb-April or there abouts you have to have some presence to keep it from getting ripped off.

In my opinion the BIGGEST consideration in getting a camp once you are sure you have financing covered is making sure you are A) in an area with low vandalism rates and B) make sure you have neighbors that live next to it that are down there all the time.

Once you can keep the camp locked down it's all easier. One of the worst feelings is to pull up to the camp to go hunting/fishing and find the booze gone, and the lower unit on someone else's shrimp boat. I've had that happen twice.

We've gotten to the point where we don't keep anything nice at our fishing camp. All garage sale furniture and electronics.

Get something nice and just live in it. No reason to just camp there.

great prices on camps in the cocodrie area right now, I'd love to buy a camp but it's hard to justify it when I have 5 I can use when I want(parents and inlaws).

I may be wrong but i think i remember someone talking about a lot of theft going on in the cocodrie area on here. Other than that great fishing we make a trip a couple of times a year. Check out cypremort point too, we have a camp over there and use it all the time fishing is good too just got to know where to go.

yeah, i wouldn't compare the fishing a cypremort point to cocodrie, plus you can add 20 miles minimum to get to snapper

I can't imagine the insurance property rates and flood rates being too friendly with these camps.

Best thing I've ever done. I've had more enjoyment out of my camp than I ever imagined. Cocodrie is a good spot with lots of water to fish. It rarely gets crowded.

We lease land from Conoco Phillips but have a camp built on the land. Insurance is impossible to get, so nothing is nice, but the camp is everything I need and want at this stage in my life. It's nice enough for the ole lady to want to come periodically but not nice enough where she wants to come all the time.
