I ran across this guy about 3 years ago or so when I searched for a video on the easiest way to remove polyurethane. He started a video series where he is making a wooden skiff. Really easy to watch and he explains everything really well. Give them a look if you have some time to kill. He shows the way old time builders made boats.

Great video. I'm actually starting my first skiff in October. Only thing I've ever made that I've been unsure about.

Bateau.com and the forum are fun to poke around. Numerous wood boat designs, plans, and boat builders. Very cool site. I wish I had the skill and patience!

Post a thread in here when you start that building that thing.

It's an awesome learning experience

ETA: There's some great online message boards where guys that build wooden yachts for a living are willing to share advice. Also, Bateau plans are real nice, but depends on how big of a boat you're building as to their worth. I designed the one i built (but sadly never finished) using delftShip. But I also had ample free time and was in college back then so I doubt I'd have the time to do that. You can find free Panga Plans online to that are great if you want to build something that style.

I'd like to start off with about a 12' flatbottom skiff.

Are you thinking Stitch and glue? Mine was strip on frame which made it a royal pain in the arse.

To me, paying for plans for a 12' flat bottom just wouldn't be worth it, but they'd also be relatively inexpensive.

If you've got any questions about getting the project started up/what the essentials are shoot me an email. It's my username at outlook. I'm no expert but I did a lot of things on my own, and learned about 5 different ways not to build a boat before it started looking like one.

I've been watching a few other guys on YouTube. If I build one it would be just to build one. When you factor in time and materials you can buy an aluminum jo-bot for much cheaper.

Couldn't be more true. I started building the first one because I was a broke college kid that wanted a boat. But it turned out to be a surpringly therapeutic hobby. I was planning on starting another build soon, but turns out the next build is going to be the bottom four feet of my house instead of a boat.

I've got some glass an epoxy that isn't going to get used. The epoxy may not be good anymore because it say in my truck for a while. I'll measure it up and see how much I have if you want it fo free

It would probably get just sd bad here. Football, baseball, volleyball, religion, dancing, wife wants to redo the bathroom...... I should be able to get to my projects by the time I retire. Thanks for the offer, sorry to hear about your home.

I grew up with my dad building his own aluminum my boats in the garage. I know it's a totally different ball game with wood, but it's still amazing to see the raw materials and finished product. Even crazier to see how much they charge you to build them. Lol

Really good tips on cutting holes with a hole saw and how to use a planer. I would love to spend a week in this dudes shop learning from him.

He's up to Episode 22 on the Total boat, I've watched every minute of every episode so far. He finally flipped it over on this episode.

One word

Up there in Yankee land (watched ep.33) he never talks about bugs, but in LA like AL we got them even in winter, and they love the wet sheen and end up on your finish. So when finishing besides wanting a cleaner dust free environment, than he's showing, you'll also want to do everything possible to keep the creepy crawly's away.

They'll inevitably fly in the wet finish and leaves tracks, as well as when working at night critters like moths will fly in your florescence (dislodging crap).

I watched damned near every episode of this guy's boat build the other night when I couldn't sleep. Took him 3 years and although it was tedious, it makes you feel like you might be able to do it. Which is scary because it'd be a huge waste of money when I get 5 minutes in and realize I cant. This is all 3 years in 3 minutes fast forwarded. He has a bunch of episodes of the process. I don't think this captures the final product, but he has it in one of his videos (boat finished, not rigged up)

Gets up to warp speed there at the end.

Believe I'd of made an one-off from the wood... used it as a plug (patternmaking)... wax it up, PVA, glass it up good... and then popped that bad boy off. Not like he was going for a wooden boat look and there's that all weak luan laid up in his hull.
