A buddy of mine wants to go camping, canoeing, rafting, etc., for his 30th birthday coming up in April. We had both been to Ocoee River in TN and loved it. I'm trying to get him to break away from something we have both done and head up to Buffalo River.

Any recommendations on campsites, rafting guides, areas with good rapids, and places to see?

Both are about a 8-9 hour drive. I feel like Buffalo River would be more scenic and maybe a little better with the trails and rapids.

The other option is to go float Guadalupe River and get trashed in Austin.

Thoughts?

TIA.

Hit the buff on a 2 day float.

Hit Hawksbill Crag on a hike (sober)

Oh ok I was wondering

The Buffalo River in MS is not deep enough to float.

I go every April to the Buffalo River in TN... I take it that's not the one you're talking about... Have yet to go to the one in AR, but am interested...

The Guadalupe with a side trip to Austin or New Braunfels/Gruene for a night...

I'm trying to plan a trip with some friends to the Devils River in South TX this year. You may want to look at that, too. I think its pretty wild and scenic.

I liked launching at Ponca, but there weren't many rapids. Beautiful. Bring a very small crawfish shaped rebel crankbait. Actually, bring a bunch.

Don't look for too much as far as rapids go.
Rarely makes it to Class II.

The National Park Service states in its publication “Currents” that the Buffalo National River is viewed as a Class I river, which is generally accepted as the least difficult river rating. However, our section can move into the Class II rating in times of high water.

Yeah, very little rapids unless you hit the river following a flood. We use to do 3 days on the river at the end of March, and while it may be cold, we caught some great rapids one year. It doesn't take long to do 20 plus miles when that thing is moving, but generally it will take a few days if you take your time and do more drinking than paddling. We always used the outfit that's located at the little motel in Jasper. Cant remember their name though.

Personally, I'd go to Canon City, CO and raft the Arkansas River. Class IV and V rapids, FTW

River Runners is the company we used. Great people

If my 110 lb. wife did it, you can too!

Been many times and always used Wild Bills on the lower end of the river. Tell them how many days and let the water dictate your plan. Lower the river the shorter you will want to go.

Wild Bill Outfitters in Yellville. Put in at Hwy 14 bridge and pull out at Buffalo City on the White River. Awesome trip!

Flatwoods Canoe base...
They drop you off and pick you up. The 15 mile 2 day trip will be fun. I went in October of 2012 and had a blast.

Remember to bring all essentials.

If you are going with any girls do the 1 day trip unless they absolutely love the outdoors

Launch in April or early May at the low water bridge at Ponca. Awesome float trip.
