Fellas-

Im going on a trip this weekend to Broken Bow to fish the Lower Mountain Fork River.

We are not bringing fly gear (even though we probably should).

We plan on usuing light spinning and baitcasts.

What baits should i bring? I know this depends on target species. Im figuring trout, small and large mouth.

What set up and gear will i need for trout? Any recomendations? Anyone have a go-to bait for up there? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks!

Polar Pop is going up there soon too.

I just got back from the White River. The Eggworm was the best bait of everything we tried.

Find a feeder creek and look under rocks for small crawfish.

Catch crawfish

Place on hook freelined in current

Catch bass and trout on said crawfish

I thought about trying to find the smallest square billed crawfish crankbait i could find.

What hooks do you recommend for live crawfish?

Ill be there this weekend also, got a stabbin cabin off Old Hochatown Rd. near BB state park.

I went ahead and booked a 4hr Saturday trip for $200 with Steve Branson since my time is limited and I would like my wife to get on some fish. Will be using spinning gear for the same reasons.

From what I can tell, the "White River Rig" is what is mostly used as far as presentation, others can chime in for baits and tips.

Make sure you look at the LMF section map as far as limits, barbed/barbless hook use, etc.

I like to use those gamakatsu octopus hooks. Size 6

Used to flyfish white river and once we got the flyfishing part out the way and wanted to catch a bunch would do this

Use same method for white bass and spotted bass on Sabine River now

This?

To the OP, the bait depicted is what we call the "eggworm". Run 1 berkley power egg up the hook and cover the eye. pinch off a 1/2 to 3/4" piece of worm and thread on the hook. It looks like a little bug or something to them. They eat the shite out of it.

Tight line it down stream, throw it cross stream and bump it along, or throw it up stream and drag it if you are in a boat.

That's too much line in the rig IMO. I like to shorten it to keep it from twisting and make it more castable.

I may be a little short on my weight tag line. go 4 to 6 inches instead of 3 inches. For the hook line, 18" max.

Another great bait is a little inline spinner. Set a split shot about 6 inches in front of it to keep it lower in the water. Put a couple powerbait eggs on the hook, then a little cut piece of shrimp (we just buy the walmart peeled shrimp, fill the rest of the hook up with whole kernel corn. This works every time.

I see what you are saying, 2 and 3 ft does seem excessive

Yes, rooster tails and bell spinners both work.

I've never tried tipping the hooks though...

OP needs to follow your advice.

Also for soft plastics for smallmouth I use to kill em up there on Helgemite soft plastics. It's some kind of bug look mold. Black and dark green were top producers for smallies. I would usually just use a small splitshot to give it enough weight to sink.

I've never fished Broken Bow, are there that many bass? I thought it was mainly for trout.

The eggworm is only for trout. Listen to those guys about the crawfish, spinners, crank baits and creature baits for bass.

I fished that river a few times without a fly rod. Big trout came on the white in-line spinners. Did not get any bass but was not targeting them. Don't forget to pinch the barb down. Lots of rules and regs depending on where you are fishing.

ETA: the river is fairly shallow too so don't buy and deep diving cranks.

Man you guys are great. I have used a similar rig with grubs and powerbait when I fished the White River over a decade ago. I appreciate all the insight.

We plan to fish NORTH of Hwy 70, as well as

Beavers Bend, Spillway Creek, Lost Creek, Evening Hole...

Are these good spots? I have never been up there. Im excited. Pictures look beautiful.

What size jighead/hook do you use for the White River Rig?

#6 Eagle Claw baitholder.

The barbs on the back of the hook shank help hole the bait up on the hook.

Thanks so much for your insight. What are the "must have's" as far as gear that i need to have with me to have the most success.

Im definitely going to rig up a spin cast with White River Rig and have a beatle spin/ rooster tail/ tiny crawfish crankbiat on a baitcast.

any recomendations?
