Brick/Mortar Question

First brick home. Never hung anything on bricks before and I need to put some decorative items up to make the Mrs happy. I noticed all the other screws/anchors are in the mortar rather than in the brick (Direct TV wiring clips, mounting boxes, etc). Is there any significance to drilling/anchoring into the mortar versus the brick itself? Is it just easier to repair mortar rather than the actual brick?
TIA
TIA

That and drilling in brick can cause big chunks of it to break and come loose. Think about how easy an individual brick is to break into pieces. Brick is just fired clay after all.

Yes, you don't want to crack a brick

Thanx guys for the sanity check.
And as far as shitting a brick...they make stool softeners for that...and pray to God that you don't shite a brick SIDEWAYS

agree with the others...brick is just too hard to drill and would likely shatter if you try it...

because thats what you are supposed to do.

Drilling in brick is a PITA. Its hard as a brick.

I've drilled brick many times with a mason bit and hammer drill without a problem. That being said, it's a hell of a lot easier to drill the mortar.

And I figured this as well, but one of my concerns was how easy is it for the mortar to crack and the anchor to become dislodged (although the item being held isn't heavy or expensive if it fell)....
Again these fears of mine are purely based on lack of knowledge and not wanting to do something wrong initially that'll have long term effects down the road.
Thanks again for all the thoughts. Mortar it is then.
