There were charter fishing captains who made anhalf million with their boat that summer. That's where the money went. Most people werent hurt financially for the short term because they got it out of BP (and then some). Some people who tried to "do it right" I'm sure got screwed. I wish I'd have had a boat and a captains license that summer. There was serious cash to be made.

Yeah, I think it's like 200 pages or so. Could be you just got hung up. There are a bunch of places that host it online so if this one doesn't work you can certainly find another.

I for one believe the effects have been overblown from day 1. I do not see any affect or even hear about it from fisherman anymore.

Red snapper are more numerous than at any time in history. Speckled trout bite this year is outstanding!

Its not like anyone without knowledge of the incident are noticing any affects from it.

Basically it is over and done with. History!

The amount of technology is diffidently mind blowing. We are about to land out the stack with 9K of riser beneath us in a 4.3 knot loop current. OIM has top say on floaters and drill ships not tool pusher. The Horizon incident was a perfect storm of frick ups and I cant tell a difference in the fishing before and after either. More time is needed to see if and how much the fishing will be affected imo.

Dynamic positioning systems use thrusters that hold the rigs in position. Its pretty impressive. I've watched the captains of those rigs rotate the rig around the hole to get the sun out of the driller's eyes. Technology is crazy.

That's hard for me to imagine keeping something that big, centered on a 8.5 inch hole! And since that is how they do it, another question pops up: When hurricanes come through and the rig is evacuated, does the captain stay on board the rig to make sure it doesn't drift away for a hundred miles? How do they keep it where it's supposed to be if everyone is evacuated??? To me, this is fascinating stuff.

They've got options. They can prepare the hole to be abandoned temporarily. They can then just drive the rig out of the path of the storm. They usually get all non-essential personnel off of the rig. I've known one offshore hand with my company who had to ride out a storm on a rig and he said it was scary as hell.

I've been out there in 30' seas (I only went offshore a few times while training, so that was huge waves to me). It looked like something out of a movie. But the rig barely moved. They are made to handle a lot. In the North Sea and off the coast of Africa in some places, that is just commonplace.

I know some operators will avoid doing any work during Hurricane season if possible just due to the financial risk of having to shut down for a few days. Doesn't always work out, but some projects are put on hold until October.

The snapper population was not impacted, and its resurgence is mostly due to reduction of shrimp boats in the gulf due to Katina, Bp, high gas prices, cheap imports etc as Shrimp nets account for 90% of juvenile snapper mortality. LINK

Trout are great some areas suck in others.

The Charter Boat guys in Mississippi I know are still hurting. Most I have spoken too claim they lost 25% to 40% of their customers. I know at least 3 that have yet to get a cent, and three guys that bought boats and licenses that year and they will never see a penny. Some people made out like bandits, while other got screwed as always.

I agree with you guys on the media, and government, but don't buy the BP shite either. They are such bastards Putin threw them out of Russia.

I was feeling Ok about it until a few months ago I talk to a few old timers I know. Theseguy catch more fish than almost any one on here as they have lived on the water here since 1700, as their families came over with Bienville, they are retired and fish about every day (Plus they freaking ignore catch limits) They are like swamp cajuns to us.

They went off for a half hour about how fricked up everything is, flounder are not where they should be, etc etc etc. shite that you and I would not noticed because we have not fished 3-5 times a week in same spots for last 300 year. Again, the simple truth is we don't know yet.

Watch the Killie fish aka cochoes .
