I had an injury and surgery that stopped me from shooting my bow and now feeling strong enough to start again. Before I start I want to bring my bow in to get some work done but I’m wondering if it’s too close to hunting season to try and get in their schedule, thoughts? Also would you bring your bow to a shop that doesn’t sell that brand? I moved so going to where I got it from isn’t on the table.

I'm sure they would be happy to have a new customer

What do you need done, and where are you?

Where are you located? It will help with recommendations.
A good shop won’t care what kind of bow it is and won’t talk down to you and try to upsell you.

I live in Spring but work on 10 just past the beltway. West Houston archery is right next to my companies office but they don’t carry PSE. There is a shop up north of the woodlands but never had a good feeling when I went in. I guess my other concern is about how busy they are getting people ready for hunting this year and I’m just wanting to get out and start shooting.

I have seen bow shops try to guilt trip customers about being busy before the season, my opinion is they should have picked a business that isn’t seasonal. That said, I’ve always walked in with the understanding that if I waited until the rush, I can’t expect a quick turnaround. I’ve generally just asked when they think they can get to it, and gone from there. It helps if you can narrow down what you may need, as opposed to here’s my bow take it behind the curtain and bring it back out shooting bullet holes.

Texas archery is a pretty nice shop. Their range is great. I’d pop in and explain what you need done, I’m sure they’d love to have your business. I never got any work done there but I shot their indoor course and techno hunt quite a bit a few years ago.

There has been a shitty archery shop or two in Greater Houston over the years. My brother and ai had the pleasure of being kicked out of Viking archery around age 16.

Coincidentally bc the owner thought we were wasting his tech’s time.

I’m sure no archery shop is going to refuse a customer just because they don’t sell the brand. Business is business.

Nothing wrong with booking an appointment. Shop May tell you no, and that’s ok, but if they give you some “it’s the busy season and I don’t have time” story then go elsewhere. Tuning a bow and string replacement isn’t that time consuming, although a temperamental bow can be hard to tune.

I like going into shops and just looking around this time of year. Listen to the conversations with the techs. If he’s an a-hole, he’s probably going to be an arse to deal with.

West Houston Archery is fine. They’re busy but they’re not unfriendly in my limited experience.

Texas Archery has great customer service. I know people that live in Lake Charles and drive to Spring to get their bows serviced there. The indoor ranges at Texas Archery are the best in the area.

I hate when they do that. Had that happen last year when I bought a bow in Baton Rouge and had it happen again Friday with a buddy’s bow. We drove 2 hours away so he could buy his bow at the shop near his hunting camp and they told him he’d have to go back next weekend to have it setup. I talked him into stopping at the shop by the house that I use to have his bow setup and the tech worked with him on getting his length and changing his mods and tuning and got his bow sighted to 20 yards. That’s why I use the shop I use. They’re not all the same.

Bought my bow from West Houston Archery, great experience with those guys. Also, I go shoot at Texas Archery and always had a good experience. I was in there on a weekday around 4pm and it was empty, try going at a time when most folks are working.

Just run into a shop first thing in morning. They will prob have you good to go in very short order. If you are just talking string and tuning stuff

And if they do a good job at a fair price remember to use them to buy your gear versus buying online. These places have a hard time carrying all the inventory we want and making enough to stay open.

We lost our shop in Pineville and he was a wizard with bows. He rigged me out in 15 minutes three years ago and I have never touched it. It is a laser beam

Wherever and whatever you do, take an arrow and your release also.

All will be super busy but if you bring these items they might fix you right up because you are ready.

Just fyi, there's nothing complicated about setting up a bow. Ninety-five percent of working on bows can be done without a bow press, and a bow press isn't even that expensive if you want one.
