Bought a Hook7 What Can It Do?

so i finally upgraded from my OLD lms-334. i've used it once and only problem i have is the "man over board" alarm started going off for no reason (yes, did a quick head count). i'm a little technologically challenged. it's easy to go out and get back and find out how deep the water is, etc with this unit but i know it can do a lot more.
do i "have" to get a chip? the base map seemed good enough to me and i've found that old maps can help with finding old shore lines/reefs. keep in mind i'm pretty much strictly a salt water guy and grew up using only a compass and running time to navigate (successfully too i may add).

It's a very basic unit and can do a good bit of stuff for what you would want. It has the hdi transducer which is a cool feature. It's a very clear and clean sonar picture in high res. The unit itself is a bit slow compared to the hds line.
As for mapping you can run map cards. Seapicke and I make satellite imagery cards for the hooks and other lowrance units. We can get one for you if you like.
its a basic unit but is perfect for a mapping unit with a depth finder as well.

Also check youtube for videos. Should be a few that walk through the features and how to use each one.

How do you go about making that, and what does one have to do to get their hands on one of these cards?

I have one. No idea what to do with it. Doesn't it already have a chip?

I bought one from these guys. Works great. Looks as good as the expensive ones but the watrrways are not labeled. No big deal to me.

when did you buy one? the most current maps we have are in a new format that allows any waterways that are named on the lowrance software to display through. Our older maps do not allows this. see above picture for an example.
Water depths show through

i just saw that on the pictures. i bought on but it didnt work in my hook 5 then you sent me a new one in april/may and it worked but no names displayed
Posted on 6/30/17 at 1:44 pm to Success
well you have the new map but the hook may not be able to display it over the map or the hook doesn't have all of the data pre-loaded like the HDS

So your model's base maps have the names of waterways already there (without the card in)?
Posted on 6/30/17 at 2:54 pm to Success
yes but not all of the named waterways but it has the bays and bayous that are on regular maps or google earth i would guess.

The boat I just bought has a new hook 7 on it. He bought a standard mapp chip for it. I haven't used the hook 7 yet, but looking forward to see what it can do. I only briefly played with it on the sea trial.

Called lowrance this pm. Hook replaced hds models, but they admitted it's a step down basically. Kinda disappointed. Hard to find a new hds model

You mean HDI. HDS is their top tier line. It's hook, elite ti then hds.
Hooks are very basic in mapping and features. It's orientated around sonar.
