ive learned through the OB never to buy a gun at a gun show. is it the same concept for hunts?
im planning on booking a hunt for August. Trade show is in January (which i will be attending). However top outfitters get booked up pretty quick. so im caught between waiting for the show to maybe get a deal vs missing an opportunity w/ a respected outfitter. do they usually run a special during shows?
its a dall sheep hunt in Alaska and i will be attending the sheep show

I would think that pricing at any given time is more a factor of what they already have booked.

Then again, if I had to pay for a booth and stand there all weekend, Im sure gonna try to make some money...

A trade show is a good choice for booking a hunting trip. I would have my reservations...

A dall sheep hunt is a huge investment. I am sure you have already done your homework. I would rather pay 5-10% more to get the outfitter and dates you want than pick leftover dates at a discount and possibly have to choose a different outfitter. If you have a superstar outfitter already picked out, I would call him and be honest. Ask for a minor discount if you book early instead of at the show. If he knows he will fill the spot either way (which really good outfitters know) than he will probably not discount it.

Never hurts to ask though.

yea. i have it narrowed down to 4 outfitters. im going to pay 5-10% more even if it only helps me sleep at night. i was to give myself the best chance if im going take on something like this. one suggested if i was flexible on my date to get on a cancel list. i could save around 5K but would have very short notice if something came up. i don't think i'm willing to chance something like that. i would also like to talk to these people in person. i guess thats only for the warm and fuzzy feeling i expect when im about to hand them a check of this size.

ETA: ive also spoken to a couple of "brokers" who say they do not charge anything for their service and it would cost no more booking through them than through an outfitter direct. these people were referred to me through the wild sheep foundation. Jack Atcheson and Sons and Safari Outfitters. obviously they are going to push their preferred clients but at the same time they would have such good reputations if they used 2nd tier outfitters. its just really hard finding an objective opinion since i don't know anyone who has a lot of experience on hunts like this.
i know its entirely possible but you talk about a shitty feeling going on one of these hunts and coming back with nothing.

Why would you not buy a gun at a gun show?

bc they are ridiculously overpriced due to them being at gun show (as a general rule)

they might be, as a general rule. But I'd never say never about buying anything at any given time.

Gun dealers have real lives and real life financial situations too. You never know what kind of financial bind someone may be in, and how low they will go on any given product unless you make them an offer.

This goes for hunts, guns, flowers, watermelons and everything else. If it's a small biz, you're probably talking to the owner, and he's the one who has to pay this month's bills at least by next month. Breaking even is better than losing!
