Do you know if he does complete restorations?

The more I research, the more I think I'd be in way over my head if I started tearing the transom apart trying to convert to a center console.

you can definitely do it
all the rigging etc runs thru a chase under a removable panel centerline on the deck

Very easy to get to and replace
Also if yours is like mine the fuel tank sits on the rear deck under the seat... Easy to remove and clean

The rear cap and transom well comes right off as well

Serious about classicmako
Post your pix there and those guys will have you a materials list and a tutorial in an hour

Good luck!

West Marine sells a product that suppose to work repairing a rotting transom by drilling in holes to the top and mixing the product and pour in. To me, that is just putting a band aide on a problem. The real way is the grind out the inside of the transom, remove all wood

If you're talking about penetrating epoxy, that shite's legit. I've used it on my sailboats rudder and it's better than new. If you know anything about sailboats you know how much pressure is on that rudder and it stayed submerged for three years without leaking a drop after I did it. Solid as a rock. Just make sure you drill enough holes. It will heat up and expand itself into the rot under pressure then squirt out the holes. Let it do that, cool, harden, do it again.

As for bolts and screws, nothing, and I mean NOTHING works better than butyl tape to end water encroachment and it's the easiest shite in the world to work with.
Check this out for how to do it. LINK

Just refill the holes with West System then drill it out fresh. Do what it says in that post, never deal with that shite again.

I'm in the process of a 23' Kenner restoration. My wife has been giving me some "looks" lately and telling me I need to take her shopping.

Yes it is. Refurb and relish every minute on it.

Early 90's I think
As you probably know McKee is out of business

Their parts inventory has been sold a few times over the years, parts are getting scarce

Any small console should fit though

This. It's hardly a "band aid"...more like a bionic transom once you're done.

Craigslist is your friend for this. Type is "Center Console", then set the max price for like $500. That'll weed out most of the center console BOATS, and you should find several different actual center consoles for sale.

Going to make the 250 mile trip back to my parents to pick it up in a couple weeks.
