I've always heard varying opinions on this subject so I put it to the OB. My on board charger is on the fritz. Can you hook a standard battery charger up to the 36V system batteries without unhooking them? Or should I unhook them and charge separately.

Hook it up with everything attached. It'll be fine if nothing is on. If you want to be safe you aren't pulling a load, just disconnect one side

Don't have to disconnect batteries but you must charge like they are 3 separate 12v batteries and not a 36v system.

This is what I've always thought too.

I have only a 24 volt system but use a BPS 3 bank 5amp charger I plug in every time I not fishing. It has worked flawlessly. No un hooking leads as I have one to the starter battery then to the the two deep cycle troll batteries. This works great but I'm not fishing ten hours and draining the batteries every time either.
