Any of you ever owned a bloodhound? Wife and eldest son want one for our next dog. Figure I should be able to get a good blood trailing dog out the deal if nothing else. Just never owned one always had labs or boxers. Looking for opinions.

Not me, but my cousin had one that was a very good dog (best I could tell). I'm not sure what kind of health problems they have, but his died at an early age unexpectantly.

My former next door neighbor had one. It was goofy and fricking huge. Dumb arse dog would run his fence line and bark at anything, like squirrels, birds, my dog, etc…and that bark can be heard literally miles away so it damn near rattles pictures off the wall. Neighbor got about 2 visits from the cops a week from noise complaints. Every other neighbor hated that animal and actually started hating them but they couldn’t keep that maloof in the house all day. I would not own one in a city limits.

i've had two

the best friend you can ever have, but be warned it's like having a roommate. she is going to do what she wants to do when she wants to do it, and correction is a sore subject (they are extremely sensitive).

do it. i wish i had my girl back every day

Yes

For what you want, it's a horrible choice. They are high powered, short lived purpose bred hounds. Hound=not good pet as a general rule. Bloodhounds might be the most hound acting hound there is. They also do not make good blood trailing dogs. You need a dog that can handle well first and foremost for that job and bloodhounds do not handle easily. They can smell a 4 day old trail, but in general they dont like trailing dead things. They want to run things. They are complete slaves to their noses. Difficult to train, big, stink really bad, ignore any command if they smell something interesting to them.

In short, look elsewhere.

Most people who are serious about blood trailing dogs want nothing to do with a bloodhound. For a part-time blood trailing dog, assuming you don't want to do it for the public, and a house pet, it's hard to beat an English Lab.

It's purely anecdotal but every hound I've been around including beagles had dog odor about 3 seconds after their last bath.. always stink like dog. Incredible, loving, cuddly, protective, fun loving, playful, smelly bastards. I fricken love them but hate smelling them. I assume you get immune to it after a while like cigars or whatever. Close friend has a bluetick and it will track a deer through the craziest nastiest stuff you can imagine and loves "singing" but smells like arse ALL THE TIME.

I had a bloodhound. Loved it. But not in a million years would it have stayed a house dog. He went outside at 3 months old and never came back in. Great dogs and loyal as they come. Mine was a blood dog and a dang good one. Biggest problem he had was that is nose was so good he would get on old scent from another deer sometimes and loose blood. A lot of that was probably my fault as that was the first tracking dog I had and didn't do a very good job breaking his bad habits. He found two tracks nearly a mile in length with little to no blood most of the way. It was impressive to watch when he figured it out.
Man I miss that dog!

that's not a given! Mine didn't want to track anything besides me. And that was to the kitchen and back. You'll have to put some effort into training it for blood trailing.

enjoyed mine while I had him, but he wasn't the lazy dog sleeping on a porch like portrayed on TV shows. He was hard headed and obstinate. They are lousy house pets due to odor and slobber. Mine lived 9 years and had the usual maladies (skin, ears). Fun dog to own inasmuch as they're kind of a novelty, but not very affectionate and certainly nothing like a lab on any level.

This is the correct answer. I love my dog but I’m not a hunter so he’s just a house pet.

Hard to train even though I spend a lot of time with him.

My American Bulldog was easy. So was the wiener dog compared to the bloodhound.

That’s bad.

People really need to stop buying dogs because they think they look cool or t because it’s the cool thing to do, and start paying more attention to exactly what the breed can offer them and their families

AKC bloodhounds are very inbred and have loads of health problems. The oldest one ever recorded was like 9 years old or something.

UKC bloodhounds are more working-line dogs and do not have as many health problems, are generally leaner, less floppy working machines.

Neither makes a particularly good pet, but mine was a UKC hound and she actually took to training and working very well. Extremely hard headed, energetic, and long legged and long winded. If she smelled something she wanted, she'd be a mile away in no time. She would also break off a blood trail to run a live deer she jumped. Would also tree coons, squirrels, run cows, just a terrorist in general in the woods. She was a hell of a good working dog but absolutely not anything close to a pet.

Yeah most people need an English bull dog ,, I think they sleep like 20hrs a day!!
Burns me up when I hear someone complain that the dog is (howling, digging, chasing, or killing stuff) and then you tell them that didn’t you know that’s what they were bred to do?!!

Pretty much only listens to me, stinky, lazy and loves disappearing. Wouldn't trade her for the world though

The only smell issue I've had is when my older beagle got up there in years (he's now 14) is his breath. But a quick brushing and a few dentastix and he's fine.

I’ve had 2 bloodhounds and wouldn’t think they’d make good house pets . My 1st one was a female named Scarlet that was as sweet as she could be. She liked to play games with cars going down the driveway and cut too close one day and got run over.
My next one was awesome. He could track a deer and didn’t want yo let it go once he found it. He’d wanted to the neighbors to visit and was known by everyone around here. He was huge but would try get in your lap if you were sitting outside. Just a big baby . He just disappeared one day. We think someone took him as he was very friendly and trusting.
They are great dogs but more of a bull in a china cabinet. They just go where they want to go and knock over things in their way. Also, the hound dog smell can be strong at times. You can bathe them and the smell just stays.

bullshite we had one it was the meanest bitch I have ever been around. Sure she may have had a screw loose but had to take her to the train station after biting 4+ people and mauling several other dogs
