I've spent hours looking on the web but can't seem to ID a bug. I am in Georgia and have been here since '85. I've always had to worry about mosquitoes. Now all of a sudden there is a bug that looks like a small flying ant...built like a tank as it takes a couple swats at times to kill them. Their bites last for about a week and "ooze" and itch so bad. I had worked in the yard, covered with long sleeves, hat, nylon track pants and one of these suckers flew under my shirt and bit me 7 times. I am trying to get a dead one so i can "know my enemy" so I can eradicate. Anyone know what I am dealing with?

After looking at some pics on the web, these don't appear to be the answer...Thanks

Are you sure it isn't a "sweat bee" stinging you rather than biting?

I hate those things so bad. Worked in Oklahoma for a summer and those things ate me alive. They leave massive welts.

Maybe? Looks similar, and if they itch after biting, then maybe that's it. I will do some checking. IF so, they are everywhere all summer now and never dealt with them before.

Are those the ones that sting you if you smack them when they're on your skin? Gotta brush em off. Learned that that hard way.

We have some at our house this year that I haven't seen before. Looks like a light brown colored queen fire ant. Hard as shite to smash because they actually juke you. My son calls them queen ants. One landed on him while fishing and bit him twice. The bites ended up making two welps and itched like crazy. Now he and my 4yo daughter that is terrified of anything that resembles an insect have a personal vendetta against them.

is it long and thin and fast? I got stung or bit by one, and it hurt worse than a red wasp

I don't think so. They don't hurt quite as bad as a horsefly bite, but they leave welts that last a while. We had one guy get bit near his eye and his eye almost swelled shut.

These things itch. They don't hurt. Look like an ant wings and they are black only the abdomen is slightly longer than an ant.

Google sand flies or biting midges and see if that looks like it.
