Just trap the queens when they emerge in the spring. Much easier. One queen = 10,000 yellow jackets.

I ran over a nest with the mower a few weeks ago and 3 of those bastards got me. I mixed a cup of dawn in a 5 gal bucket of water and poured down the hole at night. Done deal. Killed every one of them.

The can of hornet spray and gallon of gas seem to have worked. Finished the yard today with no issues. Just saw a couple stragglers around the hole.
