I figured the outdoor board would be a good place to come with this question. I'm sure you guys on here really know how to cook, especially when it comes to grilling.

I just moved into a new house and I'm in the market for a new grill, I was just hoping to get some feedback. Possibly a charcoal/propane, but I wanted to hear the opinions of you guys on a grill that it not at the highest end price-wise, something of good quality but at a moderate price range (no more than $600-700)

I like the New Braunsfels smoker. Heavy gauge iron smoker with a side fire box, that you can also grill on.

Plus you get to tend a fire... propane is for the birds and people of Arlen, TX.

$150 charbroil grill have worked great for me the past 2 years of constant use. No need to spend $700 on a grill IMO

It really depends on what you're going to be doing on it. Overall flexibility, go with an egg or similar type grill. If you do any smoking, listen to TClay. If you just grill steaks and chicken, get a $200 job from Lowes (ask for the american made one, I forget the brand but theres only one). My dad just picked up a gas and charcoal dual cooker from Sams that he is pleased with.

I wouldnt spend $700 on a propane grill though unless I was having it built into an outdoor kitchen.

I personally use a Weber propane (wasn't $700)

But I saw Weber charcoal grills on sale at Lowe's monday. It may have been a labor day sale only, but worth looking into. I think the kettles were $79, $99, $149 depending on the size you wanted.

If I was going charcoal and didn't have a separate smoker, this is the route I would go. I almost bought one just to use on occasion by the pool or for portability elsewhere

Need to know what you plan on using it for primarily in order to give you a good answer. Burgers & dogs? Steaks? Whole hogs?

In the past I have been a source of a certain ceramic grill at a very good price. One of those bulk orders is happening again in the next couple of weeks. You would have to travel to Mobile or Baton Rouge to pick it up. wickowick@gmail

Inexpensive and lasts for years. Get the gold series kettle for the extended surface area, water bowl, temp gauge, and ash catcher. For an extra $50, you can convert it to a water smoker. Best of both worlds IMO. $200-$250 for the lot. I have grilled literally tons of meat on mine over the years and loved every minute of it.

Cooked about 3 cows, a herd of swine and 4 flocks of chickens on mine.
We also use a Webber at the fishin camp that has been around for at least 7 years.

In my humble opinion, either one is a great value.

Will bust his budget. BGE's are nice if you are gonna be a grilling fricker all the time. Otherwise, I would just stick with the old Weber.

Weber genesis. Best bang for your buck that will last. Make sure you get a cover.

you have to decide if you want propane or charcoal, arguments made for either, I prefer the convenience of propane

if you go propane get a Weber Genesis (in your price range) or Weber summit (higher than your price range) but stay away from the Weber spirit (made in China)

if you like charcoal go with one of the ceramic (big egg, kammado joe, acorn, etc) just look at them and you can see the quality differences and decide which one best suits your needs

You really need two. Gas and charcoal are not in competition. They do different things.

The offset shown above certainly works. I have one. There is one huge problem with it. Most smoked meats are going to take most of a day. You're going to have problems with temperature. They are extremely inefficient. You can't leave the house during a cook. Mine will be moded soon. I'll post pics.

If it were me, it would come down to this: do I smoke more, or grill more? If you grill more, gas is the no-brainer answer. You're not getting anything from charcoal if you grill.

If you smoke more, get something in line with a temperature fan. Something like:
