So I finally got my Hunter safety course done and will be getting my license. To make a long story short, this city boy was raised by a single mom if 3 kids in a city. I am now married and love living outside the city. I have gone hunting a few times with my father in law and brother in law. I want to get my first gun. Any suggestions on a good first time rifle?

distance of shots?
Either a Tikka T3 .30-06(>150yds) or a Marlin 336 30-30(<150yds)

Congrats I don't hunt anything with a rifle just a bird hunter. I'm sure with the wealth of knowledge here they will help you out.

For distance, I am getting comfortable with 100-150 yards. I don't feel comfortable enough to attempt anything further out for risk of not having a clean kill. After some more practice maybe.

Remington 700 in .270 or 30-06
Savage w/accutrigger in .270 or 30-06
And put some decent glass on top.

Caliber .308 - pick a gun that shoulders and feels right...

Remington 700
Is a dependable, easy to operate rifle that will last you a lifetime and not break the bank. I shoot a Sendaro model in .300 WIN MAG. Thats a good bit of power for to start off with.
A few good calibers would be - 30-06, .308, .270
Good luck and happy hunting!!!!

Ruger American Rifle in any of the popular deer calibers (270, 30-06, 308)
You can get it with a scope for $300. Gets great reviews.

The Ruger American or Savage Axis are great rifles at great prices. You'll get a lot of different answers caliber-wise here, but .308, 7mm08, .270, .280, and 30-06 are all good options.

22 Ruger 10/22
30-30 Marlin Lever action
30.06 Remington 700
12 GA Pump Remington 870
Buy all 4 (because you will eventually) and be set for life

If you are looking for one all around good rifle, .30-06 or 7 mag in my opinion.
If you are looking for a deer rifle, that's a little more than you need. .270 is probably one of the most popular deer rounds.

How much have you shot? If you are just starting out I would buy a rifle with low recoil like a .223, .243, or 7-08. Optimally I would start you off with a .22 but if you want something to hunt with now I would pick one of the three I listed. Shooting long is not terribly complicated. The biggest, by far, problem civilian shooters have is the flinches and once you get them they are hard to shake off. You can prevent the flinches by dry firing thousands of times, buying a light recoil rifle, and shooting as often as you can stand to do so. Good luck.

I strongly recommend a Tikka T3 lite in .7mm-08. That caliber is easy to handle and the gun is a great first deer rifle. Several people even kill black bear and elk with the caliber. It is also a poplar youth caliber.

Are you sure you know what a .308 is?
I ask this in all seriousness since you recommended a .30-06
