So also, i've never tried to buy a car long distance. Are there ways to get someone to go inspect it before you make the drive to pick it up? I'd hate to drive hours only to figure out it doesnt crank or has major issues.

Good luck! Let us know what you do. I want an old CJ-7 but can't seem to find one close by either. Saw one in Sandestin that was seafoam green that matched my boat. Guy said it wasn't for sell.

Yes, join a jeep forum. I've had strangers inspect a vehicles for me and have been satisfied so far.

Also, join/friend your local jeep clubs. People always posting keeps for sale. Two in south Louisiana are Baton Rouge Area Jeep Association and South Louisiana Jeep Association. Not sure where you are but there should be groups from local cities/areas.

As far as inspections go, you can hire services to inspect care. The national companies usually have rep in most small'ish cities that can check a vehicle out. Search auto inspection services. A friend uses these types of inspection services and buys vehicles sight unseen.

But let's be honest, something 35+ years old is going to have issues (some rust, imperfect body, LEAKS). It might not be cost effective to hire an inspection of you are also going to see it. Best thing that you can do is have in-depth conversations with the seller prior to going meet about everything you can think of and get them to send you tons of pictures. That should get you pretty comfortable before you go look at it/buy. If it doesn't work out, you've only wasted your travel time and gas.

Craigslist - search the surrounding states as they have more wheeling areas so more people with projects.
Jeepforum
Classic CJ forum

IMHO the most important thing when looking at an old cj project is rust. At least in my experience that was the biggest pain.

you don't want an old CJ7 (made from 76-86), you want a classic CJ8 (produced from 81-86 and only 28,000 ever produced) you get a truck bed and longer wheel base. you want one with a GM350, 700R4 tranny and a dana 300 transfer case all with upgraded input and output shafts. you want a 1 ton 14 bolt rear end with 4:10 gears and dana 44 up front to match. you want Yj springs front and rear instead of those old CJ springs up front. you want 17" 8 lug wheels. you want my scrambler (some assembly required)

Or just buy an FJ-45 with zero mods and have a stronger truck.
