Put a grinder with a thicker metal blade on it before you use it. Takes two minutes, sharpens it to perfection and makes work so much easier.

I use machete's weekly. after finding the Fiskars [link=(7860)]7860[/link] Brush Axe I won't use anything else. and yes, its best to to sharpen it before using. I use a chainsaw file. The hook is clutch for vines.

In my opinion, ontario makes the best machetes. Never buy the crap ones from academy or lowes; the steel isnt worth the time it will take to sharpen the blade.
ETA: if you want a cheap one, the coldsteel blades will suffice and work well.

The Gerber/Fiskars ones are the best IMHO

Ontario or Marble's. Both made great machetes out of high carbon steel that can take a sharp edge and keep it after a lot of use. Don't waste money on stainless crap from Gerber or Fiskars. Cold Steel is ok but overpriced and mostly medium carbon steel.

I can honestly say nothing has held up well cutting in salt marsh environment. Like the cane because of weight behind it helps considerably.

That's what I have. I like how it fits flat in the seat pocket of the truck.

For $50 with a lifetime warranty and a sheath, I think I can take the plunge. I am guessing it is just regular carbon tool steel used in knives with a black oxide coating. It has held up well for my uses

Not much will unless you take the proper maintenance precautions. There are plenty of coatings you can use to treat the blade quickly.

Berber gator or bear gryllls parang.

The orange handle is cheesy until you see it laying there. I lost a couple due to them being black. Orange is good idea.
