I have done out of state hunts, on public land, the last 2 years and have really enjoyed them. Next year I want to dedicate a week to hunting a WMA in Louisiana. Where would my efforts be best spent?

I would prefer bow hunting just to limit the pressure around me but I am not opposed to a gun hunt.

Attached is a link to the department of wildlife and fisheries deer harvest report. Looks like Richard K. Yancey had the most deer harvested last year.
This doesnt take into consideration federal refuges which may be the route you want to go if bow only but it gives you and idea of where the pressure and kills are coming from

I hunted there many years. Unfortunately it’s all private leases now and on some of it there are houses being built. Weyerhaeuser selling it off

Surprised to see Red River/Three Rivers (Yancey) so high on the list. Ever since the flood over there a few years ago, I've seen almost no tracks/rubs.

I suspect you won't get many honest answer (especially judging by some of the early comments).

Almost every WMA has bow only periods, so the pressure shouldn't be an issue anywhere you go. You just have to look at the brochure for the dates to see when they are bow-only.

Some of the smaller WMAs like Marsh Bayou and Acadiana Conservation Cooridor are bow-only for the entire season, but either have a good bit of local pressure or are difficult to access.

Bayou Cocodrie if you like getting away from crowds there are some hammers in there! and Tensas NWR. Those two are 100% legit. Bayou Cocodrie a lot less foot traffic

It's NWR, which is better in my opinion but BBM is a gorgeous bow only and it's like 18k acres or somwthing.

I have heard good things about Loggy Bayou, and the harvest report echos that.

Prepare yourself for a different experience than out of state hunting. I give Louisiana hunters all the credit in the world, because it doesnt get much more difficult than hunting Louisiana deer. My thoughts:

Dewey Wills, Richard Yancey, Sherburne and similar places have too many yahoos in the woods, terrible roads, muddy woods and atv trails etc.

Kisatchie, Sicily Island (Sonny Gilbert), Tunica, Ft. POLK, Peason Ridge, and Bodcau are more my speed. Kisatchie is only one deer per day however.

Also whether or not you can camp on the WMA makes a difference to me, I camp in a toy hauler.

My .02 cents

Maybe I should have led with "I am from Lafayette and I am very aware of some of the BAD ones in the area". Appreciate the help though.

Atchafalaya Delta at one time was almost a 1/1 deer per hunter effort. Not easy hunting and not easy getting to. There is a campground.

Well, I wouldn't call Sherburne bad. Or Maurepas for that matter. They're just not Tensas or Thistlethwaite.

Not bad at all from everything I've heard as far as deer. Its just tough hunting because there's very little dry land. If you have a boat/pirogue to get deep back in the swamp and a pair of waders, I've heard they have a good deer herd. Its just more work than I'm willing to put in
