Which of those makes/models would you choose as best overall for the money?

Throw the CZ 550 in there too. It's a good one.

Hard to say which one is the "best" value. It depends what you value.

The tikka will be the best for out the box accuracy value most likely, but they're all very easily 200 yard deer killers.

For good American made greatness the Winchester and Remington's are all great rifles you'll be happy with.

Put your hands on them and get the one you like. They're all very good rifles.

Remington 700 is the benchmark by which all other rifles are compared IMO. You can buy a cheap one but the more expensive flavors of 700 are fantastic guns.

What are the differences between the BDL, CDL, etc? The only obvious difference I can see are the shapes of the stock.

Tikka all day
Always had Browning and just decide to try the Tikka, The trigger is the same as the trigger on the Sako but half the price.
I then had to bring all my Brownings and have trigger jobs because they felt like crap compared to the Tikka

The finish on the metal is much better on the higher end ones.

Put your hands on them. There's no other way to decide really. You'll know which one you want

Is there a particular barrel length I should be looking for? I was told 22" is a good length.

I'm hearing good things about Winchester. Apparently now that they're making the model 70 in South Carolina, they're better than pre-64. Model 70 .308 Featherweight:

Remington 700
Winchester M70 Featherweight will keep you under a grand.
I am a huge fan of both guns. Im also not boycotting Remington cause they wont move their company.

This from Wiki (emphasis added):

In October 2007, FN Herstal announced that it would produce Controlled Round Feed Winchester Model 70 rifles at its facility in Columbia, South Carolina, where it currently manufactures the M240, M249, and M16 for the United States military, as well as its SPR and PBR lines, which are, in fact, variants of the modern Model 70 Controlled Round Feed rifles.

I was shooting a friend's Rem 700 last winter, and I was less than impressed. The action was a little finicky, and the rifle just had a cheap feel. I've handled (but not shot) some new model 70s at BP and Cabelas, and they just had a much more solid/quality feel.

Also I prefer the controlled round feed in the Win over the push feed of the Rem. And don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Remington, I love my 25 year old 870. Though it appears that Rem qa/qc might have been slipping recently.

I've been looking to pick up a model 70 featherweight compact in .308. It's got a 20" bbl, 39.5" o/a, 13" lop, and weighs in at 6.5 lbs. I'm thinking I'd put either a Leupold VX-3 1.75-6x32 or 2.5-8x36 on it. I'm looking at making up a sort of lightweight 'mountain rifle'.

Remington 700 has many decades of that design being the benchmark for accuracy. And that new trigger they have on them is fricking awesome right out the box. You used to have to put a Timney or something in them. Not anymore. The only issue I have with them now, other than the boycott, is the synthetic stocks are just not strong enough out at the fore end so if you're using one of the new varmints and you're on a bag, they can flex up into the barrel.

That said, there are a LOT of fine rifles these days. The Savages, Tikka's etc have really upped their game significantly. For a 200 yrd rifle, any of them would be more than satisfactory.

I will continue to shoot and buy Remington products until I no longer like the results or they move production of the model I want over seas.

Has this thread made your decision any easier?

Obviously it varies greatly from person to person.

I was told by a worker at Bud's to stay away from the new 700's. they ordered 10 and all but two shot under 1 MOA. They talked to Remington about it and they would not replace the barrels. Which, per-Freedom Group (or whatever they call themselves) it wouldn't have been an issue. He said that if a Savage won't shoot 1 MOA or better, they will replace the barrel. I ended up going with the Savage Model 10 PC.
