Alright all bullshite aside, here's my opinion on it.
The ruger is incredibly robust and close to impossible to shoot out of timing no matter what you feed it or how much you feed it. It's also heavier and comes factory with rubber grips. The trigger is decent out the box but will become great with use. All of the guts are stainless. The cylinder release on the ruger is the best out there IMO.
The smith 686+ has a nicer trigger out the box and is a 7 shot. It wins out in the looks department by a long ways. It weighs a little less than the ruger too, which may be a good or bad thing depending on what matters to you. Lots of them come with wood grips, which sucks for everything except looks. They're not nearly as robust as a ruger and will shoot out if you feed it an asspile of magnums.
Colt Pythons are fantastic. The cylinder release sucks, but everything else about them is great.

Colt Python.
Perfect balance and feel and shoots like a dream.

I wouldn't trade my GP100 for any other revolver on the market right now (but a Python would have me rethinking that). Stainless finish, 6" barrel. Probably going to grab a new wood grip to replace that tacky hogue it came with though.

A Colt Python is the best 357 but you don't have to buy that to have a good one. Also, I would buy a riot 12 guage shotgun for the home instead of a 357. A shotgun will frick someone up and you don't have to be accurate in a time where you will probably be pretty scared.

Oh and if you don't like the trigger, do like I did. Have the LGS install a 7 dollar set of wolf springs and watch that clunky 8lb. pull turn to butter. If you bring them the springs at purchase they might give you a discount.

This is a good choice in a subby:

What's the make and model on that 8 shot?
Posted on 1/28/13 at 8:33 pm to Choirboy
It's a smith. Not sure of the make.
That cylinder has got to be thick as hell. Or thin walled.
Eta: looks to be thin walled

I am a huge fan of revolvers over semi autos (with the exception of a 1911), but refuse to buy a used gun (I ain't buying a used gun, period). Since Colt no longer makes the Python, I'm stuck with the Smith and Wesson since I can get one new. Ruger and other currently made revolvers don't interest me much. Colt is losing my business because of their marketing strategy because I would buy a new Colt revolver over S&W regardless of price.
