I shot one a few times, I couldn't tell much difference between it and my extrema2.
You are however on the right track with Beretta, by far the best semi on the market.

bought one last November. I love it.....the kickoff system and light weight of the gun are unbelievable.

Actually had researched my options last November and was set on buying the extrema2.....salesman up sold me to the A400! I don't remember there to be a huge difference between them (other than price of course).

The biggest difference in the two, and I own both, is the balance of the 400 is heads and shoulders above the e2.

I own two of them -- mainly for sporting clays, some for hunting.
If you get the "kick-off" system, the recoil is reduced appreciably. With the Ken Rucker system, recoil is almost non-existent (Duck hunting with 3.5" magnum loads felt just like skeet loads).
I have shot Beretta 391's for 4-5 years. The A400 is a better gun, in my redneck opinion. I have no idea about how it stacks up against the Xtrema, or other Beretta models.
The A400 stays a lot cleaner than my 391's. I usually clean the A400 about once every 7-8 cases of shells. I'm sure I could go 20-25 cases between cleanings if I wanted to.
