What would y'all recommend?

Possible to get a decent beginner bow under $500?

Very possible and you won't have to settle for a "beginner" bow. Go to a local shop, have them take your measurement for draw length and what draw weight you're comfortable with. After that, you can either get a ready to hunt package on a middle of the road bow or do the smart thing and get on craigslist. You can likely find a high end bow that's set up with everything you could need for $500.

Check out Complete bow packages. My brother ordered one from here. They have pretty good deals.

Check out Mission bows, they're made by Mathews and use very similar technology.

I just picked up my first bow last week. I got a Mission Hype DT. Its made by Matthews. With everything on it I got it for $530 at a local shop. I like it. I went with a new bow from a local place because I know nothing about bows. So I will tinker with this one and learn how I like it setup and then my next one will be a used bow.

First thing: Find out your Draw Length

Second thing: Search for a decent used bow with that draw length or an adjustable draw length bow

You can find an old Matthews, Bowtech, or Hoyt in the $300-$500 range but make sure you get the proper draw length.

Find your drawlength, then get on the archerytalk classifieds. for a first bow, I would stay away from speed bows and look for something with a 32-35 ATA length and longer brace height.

Great starter

Unless you are buying an Obsession or Elite (they have transferable warranties) I'd personally advise against spending $500 on a used bow with no warranty.

You can get a Mission or a mid tier bow from Bear or PSE in the $500 range and have a warranty.

This is the exact reason I bought a mission instead of buying a used bow. I like having the peace of mind with the warranty.

Thanks guys. I'll swing by Bowie in the near future and get fitted. I used them to adjust my bowfishing bows and the guy in the bow section was a good dude.
