I was amazed at how much more the guns are worth now. Not complaining, either. Should have put my retirement funds into guns 40 years ago... Whippersnappers, take notice.

It's the lesser known models that have potential to rise in price. Something like a Ruger LCP or Springfield XDS aren't going to really gain value like a Python did.

It's a lot like collector cars, I think.

Really nice stuff that is produced in low quantities will always appreciate in value.

That said, even run of mill stuff, if it's old and really kept up, will be worth good money.

Look at what a clean '66 Ford or Chevy truck is worth now.

That's exactly the kind of guns I was talking about. S & W Model 10's, S & W 66's, old military rifles, etc. I'm not talking about a good ROI on something that was purchased last year. I'm talking about guns that were purchased years ago, for a comparative pittance, but are in good condition. I was amazed when I actually took the time to do some research on different guns on gunbroker. Really, they are worth more than the same money invested in a company retirement plan 40 years ago and cashed out today.

I don't know about playing the stock market and stock picking, JB. I'd probably lose my shirt on that! All I'm saying is that based on what I know I paid for stuff 40 years ago and what it is worth today, I should have invested a lot more heavily! But, of course, I wasn't buying for investment purposes. I just saw it and wanted one, at the time. Should have bought a lot more of em. For a young person, I can't think of a better investment for 40 years down the road based on the prices then and now.

Guns are great. Buy them, use them, and they are still worth more than the day you bought them. For the most part

Old cheep guns have gone up the most recently. Like SKS, Mosin Nagants, etc.
Handguns have been the same.

Jay Leno says he's lost money on stocks, but never on any collector car he's bought.

Yep, I agree those old SKS and Mosin Nagants will really increase in value...big time. Look at what has happened to the M1 carbines and M1 Garand. 1917 Springfields were very affordable and AVAILABLE 40 years ago. Try and buy one now IF you can find one. I remember when I could buy surplus Enfield SMLE .303's for way less than 50 bucks each. Check out the prices now.

Somehow, I get the impression you might know a little bit about car collecting and their value!

more specifically its firearms that are no longer in production and/or no longer imported, especially military variants. mosins, SKS's, AK's, IMI UZI's, valmets, garands, 1911's stuff like that. once they are all distributed it will be a sellers market on them. if i was investing in firearms now i would be buying up any military-issued rifle or handgun i could find in good condition

nothing that is in current production except the very, very high end, limited edition stuff is going to go up in value

Hmm...not necessarily. For instance, I bought a used S & W Model 10 .38 Special (NRA Excellent) for 75 bucks around 1975. Check out what Gunbroker bids are for this same handgun. I assume S & W is still manufacturing the Model 10?
