I prefer Yamaha, but I would buy a boat with a Mercury Optimax if the deal was right (unless we're talking four stroke, then I wouldn't touch Mercury with a ten foot pole. Mercury has put out some complete shite four strokes - Verado for example). I wouldn't own a Evinrude, my Dad bought a new rig with an E-tech on it a few years ago, and it wouldn't crank if the temp was below 42*. Neither Evinrude or the dealership could accurately diagnose the problem - had him running different types of oils, changed filters, sensors, etc... He sold it and just ate the loss, handled it better than I would have.

I would also recommend maxing out the horsepower, which for the boat your talking about buying is either a 115 or a 150. You'll be happier with the performance (not just top end speed) and it will help resale value and make it more sellable.

The Ranger/Triton is a nice rig BTW.

I bought Lowe boat 2 years ago, Stinger175 with a 75 Murcury 4-stroke. I like it alot. Word of advice, no matter what you buy, if you are going to do any spider-rigging for white perch, then buy a boat with the 2-seat capacity for the front of the boat. My family loves to go fishing with me now. Most of the action is in the front of the boat.

I have an older alum rig, 17.5 ' 2000 Skeeter w/ 75 yama. It's actually a G3 boat, from what I have been able to find, G3 sold Skeeter some alum boats, and skeeter sold G3 some glass boats. So basically I have a G3, highly recommend. Center rod locker, I can hold up to 7'6" in there, brother has a lowe with the side lockers and he can only get 7'. No front livewell, not a big deal for me, becasue I would rather have the dry storage anyway. It came with a 12v 45lb MK, upgraded to a 24v 74lb, best money ever spent on my boat. Go to BPS and play with their electronics see which one you like best. I would get 2 combo units though, nice to have the map on the trolling motor.

My only problem with the Trackers are the Mercury motors.

The engine is the best part of that combo.

I like the lay out of the RT 188 and now seeing the double seat accessory posted here, I think I am sold on it.

Great idea going to BPS, would be a great learning opportunity too.

Ok so why does everyone hate on Evinrude? Are Mercury and Yamaha that much better? Why so?

Thanks again!
