Does anyone have any experience with a center fire rifle barrel bulge?

I had my AR-15 cleaned today (I had a free cleaning from a previous purchase) and he said I have a minor bulge about an inch below my muzzle break. He said it is ok to shoot sparingly and to clean it but recommends buying a new barrel.

Should I cease shooting immediately or should I just roll with it. It is not visible outside but barely noticeable inside.

I am skeptical. Who told you this?

I'd mic it out. If it's bulged on the inside its bulged on the outside. The barrel may have a slight taper but it should be easy to tell regardless.

Gunsmith at the local shop. I do not see anything on the outside. I see a "minor" black ring near the tip of the muzzle that he claims is the bulge.

I can take pictures of the outside of the barrel and try to get one of inside for you. Would you prefer it on here or email?

FWIW: I had a big "egg" on my shotgun barrel. My gunsmith said no matter how big or small the structural integrity of the barrel had been affected and that containing minnie explosions in anything not structurally sound wasn't smart. I immediately punched up the website and ordered a new barrel.

+1

Any defect in the barrel will get worse and worse if you keep shooting with it.

But a picture would be extremely helpful in this case. I think we're all a bit confused in the way you describe it.

Any idea what caused this? - Did you fire a round after a squib, or did you oil the inside of the barrel?
