I have a telescoping aluminum one that I have had for many years. I have never been that happy with it. the galvanized duck bill always rusted and the poles would stick together and be hard to extend most of the time.

I like the long carbon fiber ones but am too cheap to buy one. I am going to try to make one out of bamboo. I saw a few post that people use Y limbs for the foot on their poles. I thought I would try that.

Have any of you tried bamboo ones? Do you let them dry before working with them? Can you seal them when they are still green?

I harvested 3 good size canes yesterday. finished length will be about 11.5'

Any tips or ideas y'all have will be appreciated.

I have no tips, but if you need more canes I have plenty for you to choose from. I'll ferry you beers across the yard while you cut them.

That the giant sized stuff? I got a ton of the cane fishing pole sized you can have for free as well.

Tenfoe that sounds like a deal. I probably need some longer ones. yesterday I had a 12' cargo trailer attached so I had to trim them down to about 13' to get them in the trailer. I think I want them about 16'to 18'.

I'm in Denham Springs. Tenfoetenfoe@gmail whenever you want to come by and cut some. I have some 25-30 ft tall and bigger than you'd want for a push pole unless you are pushing a log up the Mississippi River Tom Sawyer style.

Hogdaddy that looks like a good deal. I really need a longer one. my boat is 24'. I am not going to pole it very much. but sometimes need to get off the mud, if you know what I mean.

Research heat treating it and the benefits. I know this is done in the process of making bamboo fishing rods to both straighten and strengthen the bamboo.

If you have a boat this big, I wouldn't try to get away with a cheap homemade push pole.

24' boat and "too cheap to buy a nice one" doesn't really compute to me.

Video of a hiking stick, but it should work the same.
The flame treating helps the bamboo last longer

I had always hung the bamboo up in trees till they dried out over the winter. Best time to cut is after the first freeze. That was the way all old times did it. Tie it on the tip, throw the string over a high tree limb, tie off.

That was interesting Shexter, Thanks. Tempering a 18 footer is going to take some time. I think I may use a crawfish burner or maybe a heat gun. I wonder how hot it needs to be......

After they dry good put poly urethane on them. If not they will rot in 2 years.

Is poly the best thing? I bought some spray poly to do a front door, after I did the door, I read on the can it was for indoor use only. WTF?

you need to get a plumbers torch and work the moisture out of it.

I have several pieces that have been up in the attic that I bought for bamboo bly rods. Still needs to be heat treated. Basically keep the torch moving. The bamboo will start to steam and bubble on the ends. When it stops you're done.

Man I might need a really long one after reading this.

"Generally I tell customers to take the boat length, add 3 feet and then tweak for specific fishing conditions," says Joe Welbourn, owner of Carbon Marine.
