At what age did you or your kids upgrade from spincast reels?

My 7 yr old is really driven to fish. He has one of the cheap plastic spincast rod/reel combos currently. I was thinking of just getting him a zebco 33 spincast and a nicer rod but they don't seem to be made as well as previous. I want to upgrade from the spincast at some point, I'm just not sure now is the time.

what's the downfall in buying now?
works out, gets used immediately.
not ready yet, he gets to become slowly comfortable with it and will be ready soon enough.

I'd consider letting it be the kid's choice. They have to want to learn the different systems.

I got mine a "big boy" rod at 6 or 7. It took them a little bit but they picked it up. My oldest just turned 11 and wanted an open face bass setup. He's had it about 2 weeks and is already catching bass worm fishing in the pond behind the house. My 4 yr old is zipping a bettle spin from a zebco 33 . I would go for it.

Started my boy practicing with one of my open face reels about 10, takes a lot of patients at that age but worth it in the long run

When I was about that age, my dad used to go fishing down in Venice/Buris every few months and come back with just tons of fish. I wanted to go so bad, but only had a little zebco. So he got me a baitcast reel and a little rubber weight that could be tied on just like any lure and made a deal with me.
As soon as I could throw it 10 times in a row from across our back yard into a galvanized tub, he would take me.
I was literally out there everyday for hours practicing. I had to learn to get my own backlashes out, etc. I soon learned and he took me.
To this day (20+ years later), he still gets frustrated that I cast better than he does and get far fewer backlashes when we are in the wind.

Have both. Mine was about that age when he grabbed one of my open face spares. You don't want him getting frustrated so have a spincast ready when he loses his patience. After a few trips he almost exclusively uses the open face but he needs help/reminders still.

FWIW, I used zebco 33s until my freshman year of college and landed many bass over 5 lb with them. I am conceren most I suppose with hand size and ability to handle the reel due to that. Any suggestions on quality smaller sized baitcast reels?

Why not transition to smaller 1000 or 2000 size spinning reels? Then move on to baitcasters at a later date? A 2000 size spinning reel is plenty small enough for small hands of kids and can handle pretty much everything from bream to slabs to bass.

Seems like I remember seeing some high dollar spincast reels in Bass Pro. (up to about $100) If you want to stick with that style, looks like they have options.

When Jumbo Sports or Sports Authority went out of business my dad (not a freshwater guy) filled up a shopping cart with random fishing stuff and gave it to me one day. In it was a couple of old AG Ambassadors. Could not get the hang of them... and they sat there 8-10 years until a friend gave me a rod with a Citica on his boat one day, and told me thats what I was using all day, it was a LONG day but as you can see that's my username so the rest is history.
Long pointless story but heres the point if they like fishing already, and it's not going to deter them from fishing give them a new reel and let them figure it out.

Spinning combos have utility but miss the mark here because:
1: That's not what dad uses
2: The drag is usually much less
3: That's not what dad uses
4: The M/MH rods are heavier and longer than typical baitcast rods of similar spine
5: That's not what dad uses
6: Spinning rods rarely have short butts or trigger grips
7: That's not what dad uses
8: Most stronger spinning rods are fiberglass or hybrid glass carbon combos that have "slow tips" which are not as useful for imparting action to a bait as a "fast tip" carbon baitcast rod.
9: That's not what dad uses.
He is also fairly proficient with a spinning rod now.

This. grandpaw was a charter guide. I made a trip with him and all he had were calcuttas and ambassadors.

Hell when I was 6 and my brother was 5, my dad would get us out in the yard and tie a 1/4 oz sinker on our line and have us try to throw in a bucket with a baitcaster. I honestly can't remember a time when I couldn't throw one.

I also started throwing a baitcaster around 8.
Only real advice I have is make sure he practices away from cars hah. My dad bought me an Abu and sent me in the yard to practice with a 1/4oz bell sinker. Next thing he new he had a giant dent in the side of his car.
