Assist me in choosing a boat

I've started a few boat threads as the time has gotten closer to me making a purchase. I've shifted my interest into purchasing a bay boat. The versatility of a bay boat is intriguing.
I originally wanted a surface drive, due to how much duck hunting I plan on using the boat for. However, being that most of my hunting has be done on the coast, I can get away with using a pirogue to paddle the rest of the way in. I can also navigate the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers safely. There's also the option to do more than just duck hunt out of an overpriced mudboat.
So, I'm trying to stay around ~20k... I of course wouldn't mind spending less than that. I'll be buying used, and there is a good market for used boat buyers. Which boats would you be targeting? Specific maker you would avoid?
I appreciate any advice

I'm willing to spend 20ish if the right boat comes around. I'd love to be at 10-15k. 19ft at a minimum and 21ft is probably as big as I can afford. That's about as far as I got. I'm about 3-4 months away from a purchase, so I'm trying to get all the research I can in.
What will you be using the boat for? Offshore? Any shallow water inshore marsh use?

I was in this position last year. Nautic Star, Blue Wave, Blazer, Kenner, Frontier and Skeeter (just to name a few) are all good fiberglass bay boats that can be found in that price range. Look at what layout you want (ie large fishing decks on bow/stern, storage, livewells) and see what will fit you best. Also take into consideration where you'll use it most and consider what they draft. I wouldn't go shorter than 19'.
FWIW I landed on a 20' blue wave and I like it. Nautic star would've been nice too.

how do run a trolling motor on a Panga? serious question.

Like any other boat, there are longer shafts on newer motors and aren't a problem.
The wind can be a bit tough in the bow of a panga but the boats versatility trumps all

Honestly, you're going to have to decide if you want a fishing boat or a hunting boat. If you plan to hunt and carry a pirogue, I'd definitely go aluminum. Hunting will be very hard on a fiberglass boat.
You should be ale to find a 18x60 aluminum boat with center console and a 115 hp for your price. It's not going to be a beautiful boat and won't be perfectly laid out for fishing, but it'll work.
If you're wanting a fishing boat with the ability to fish the islands, I'd go 22 ft skeeter with a 150-200 hp. Mid to late 2000 models can be had for 12-15k.

Don't forget to factor in a decent budget for electronics. Gps depth radio trolling motor power pole if you so choose all add up real quick.

If you're leaning towards bay boats, 19' Pathfinders can be had around your budget. Eventually I'll get a 24' Pathfinder or Blackjack.

Picked up a key west with a Suzuki a few months back. It has been nothing short of a great boat so far.

The boat will be used for transportation down the rivers. I'll carry pirogues and use them to work through all the nasty stuff. I've seen tons of boats with a couple pirogues on racks heading down the rivers. I understand there will be some wear, but will that really tear up the boats? Anyone here carry pirogues in their bay boats care to comment?

The main reason I'm buying a boat is to hunt, but it's not the only thing I'm going to use the boat for. If I own a bay boat then I'll definitely be more inclined to do alot more fishing. If I was hunting the spillway and hitting the swamps I'd definitely need a surface drive. However, the coastal marshes have many spots accessible with a short paddle.

Do you have a friend with a boat?
If yes, then his boat is your answer. Throw him a hundred bucks, a case of beer, and top off the tank and borrow his for the weekend.
Just saved you a shite ton of money and problems in the future.

No doubt about it duck hunting is hard on a boat. I'll try and remember to take a picture of mine today. I don't clean it during duck season only after.
You will get scratches dings and such from putting pirogues along side and loading and unloading. However that's what I have my boat for to hunt and fish after 17 years I think it's served me well.

Oh, you can definitely do it in a fiberglass boat. I've made several trips down river in a 22 bay boat with a pirogue and all my hunting gear - no problems. I just hate to hear the awful sound of scratching while unloading the pirogue and all the gear.
I'm personally a fan a aluminum in that 18-20' range. Throw in a few electronics and a trolling motor and you've got a boat that can go down river to hunt and fish the islands on the right day. Not to mention the shallow water in the marsh or freshwater fish the spillway.
But don't get me wrong, the comforts and ride of a glass bay boat in the 22' range can't be beat when running across lake pelto.

This. I was a huge duck hunter back in the day. Man that duck hunting gear will play havoc on a fiberglass boat.
