Backstory: a fb friend of mine has lost two chickens. She makes a fb post about the chickens missing and about 5 people say weasels. Now this is around Ponchatoula/Robert, and in my 25 years here I've never seen or heard about weasels even existing here. Am I oblivious or are they wrong?

Wikipedia Link.

Minks are in the weasel family. We have lots of them in South Louisiana.

Looks like different sub-species range is pretty much over North America except some the arid Southwest.

Yes. Long tailed weasels. Only ran across one and it was Vernon parish. They are pretty secretive but do occur

Don't know what got the chickens though. Could be several things

Skunks will kill them too. Have-a-heart trap with a canned cat or dog food should catch the culprit.

I have had a possum kill and eat some of my chickens back when I had some. I think people forgot about those nasty varmints at times.

I saw one in the wild exactly one time years ago when I was just a kid while squirrel hunting with my father. I mostly remember it because my father would not let me shoot it.

Regardless of whether or not there are weasels in ponchatoula, a coon ate her chickens.

I agree. Coons will reek havoc on a pen of chickens.

There are some very large, well organized weasels in Tangipahoa Parish.

Here is the leader
