AR question. Rather than searching message boards, I'm going to ask here.

I have a S&W MP sport. While it is almost unanimously praised, it is always called an "entry level" AR.
Aside from being not mil spec without a dust cover and forward assist, why is it considered entry level? It's not like it is a composite wal mart AR.
The more expensive ARs seem to ship with bland handgaurds and iron sights just like the SW so what does the rest of the price account for?

Don't worry about status crap. Stock up on ammo and high cap mags before they are banned. Fun to shoot as long as ammo is less than 40 cents per round.

Kia and Cadillac both make cars that get you from A - B.
One does it with a better trigger, better accuracy, better finish, etc.

I can peg steel at 600 yards firing Tula on my S&W Sport. Where does the rest of the money go?
Not being a smart arse, just asking.

Fitment, fit and finish, barrel, trigger, billet vs forged, anodized vs cerakoted finish, upgraded handguard/grip/stock as opposed to the shitty A2 furniture that comes standard, and name.
There are some huge companies that make parts and receivers for everyone. Smith, for example, has their receivers made by Continental Machine & Tool, who also makes Stag, Rock River, Colt, and Noveske parts.

You handle the Core 15 line? I' picked up a couple a while back and highly recommend them.

We had them for a while and haven't reordered, but we do special orders for customers on occasion. They're good stuff, they just weren't a household name like some others and didn't sell as well

This is the correct answer.

What did the poor clip ever do you you? Do you empty your magazine into it every time, or just hit it with a few rounds?

Just one stripper clip? 10 rounds doesn't sound like enough shooting for each month.
For the OP, the reason it's considered an entry level AR, to expand on what Carson said, is that it is a basic setup. Everything is standard and costs them less money to put the rifle together. So what you get is a quality shooting rifle for less.
S&W makes an excellent product. Their barrels are accurate, their finishes are good, and their customer service is good. It's just seen as entry level because of the price point and the accessories that come with it. For a general self defense rifle or fun rifle, it's perfectly fine and will serve you many years of fun.

I pick up 2 boxes of Tula every single trip to Wal-Mart. Without fail. I have about 1000 rounds now.

Most of the difference in price is in finish and accouterments.
Though S&W did cost cut the MP15 Sport a couple of years ago. They changed the really nice Melonite 1:8 twist 5R rifled barrel for a not quite as nice traditional button rifled 1:9 twist barrel that isn't "Melonited" any more but uses a process that they say is functionally identical to Melonite without having to pay for the Melonite name.
When you are talking about high volume production cutting out the forward assist and dust cover can save not only on extra parts, but on labor, and machine time machining the features into the receiver after forging.

Sounds expensive as opposed to buying a 1000 round case once.

First, most that talk about mil-spec have no idea what it even means. If the Army had settled on its original plans, 1:9 twist would be the mil-spec today. Anyone who brings up mil-spec in an attempt to talk down the rifle you have should be immediately ignored. Second, you have an excellent rifle by any standard. It's a great platform from which to build how you want it to suit you. Better triggers are drop-in parts as is pretty much all of the furniture. No need to pay more for that stuff.

I've found the M&P Sports to be very accurate.
I know this comment is going to find lot's of opposition, but just cut back on that steel case ammo. Nearly every time I see an AR at the gun range with the bolt stuck forward, a steel case is the culprit. I don't really care what all the "experts" say. Steel ammo does not work great in the AR-15's.

I stack Tula and Wolf and use it for pinging. I've never had a round of it not cycle. On my family land the farthest LOS I can get is 600 yards and I can ping 12x18 steel all day with my Sport from that distance.
I'm not a reloader so not worried about that.
It's dirty ammo but other than that, I'll take the .24/rd.
