Who here has built one from scratch?

What are the thoughts on checking headspace for a first time build? Is it worth buying the gauges? Are gunsmiths charging just a few bucks to check a bare bolt and barrel? Any regret not checking headspace on a new build? Thanks.

Am building a 300 black for range and HD.

Same for me. Just got done building mine. The last parts I had to buy for the build were handguard and stock from a local shop. Since I had the rest of the gun put together at that point, I brought it in the store to show to the guys in there and ask questions like that. They said you don't typically need to worry about checking it

Take that for what it's worth.

Thanks. There is good news though that I think will work well. I found rental online at: LINK for $8.

That works perfect for peace of mind and doing it myself. I'm about ready to kick mine into over drive. After the barrel, I'll be ready to finish upper soon.

I have a gauge set but by the AR's design the chances of getting something that won't pass from a known commercial supplier is extremely small. In fact chamber tolerances are incredibly consistent even across brands whether they hammer-forge or turn a cutter. It might be different if you are making a serious custom build but off-the-shelf stuff is rarely a problem.

I have no personal experience w/ the AR. OTOH, I rented a go/no gauge from 4-D about 14 mos ago and was pleased. I was converting a Stevens bolt action rifle chambered for 270 Win to custom barrel in 221 Remington Fireball. At the time, their minimum fee was $10. If they have something you want to buy to make the $10 minimum, that's fine. There was nothing I wanted to buy so the customer service lady just added $2 to my order.

Don't really need to worry about it if you bought a barrel already assembled. Just line it up, tighten the barrel nut and pew pew pew.

I have order a BCM BCG and going to put that with a Noveske barrel. Noveske offers a head spaced bolt with their barrel for $65. Is it worth getting the head spaced bolt and replacing the bolt that comes in the BCG?

I mean, you have to do it. You cannot take a chance on bad headspace. You buy/borrow the gauges or you get it done by a pro.

There's always that one time where a part or process didn't go according to plan. The set of gauges is cheap insurance for your AR build.
Once you get into bolt actions then there is no choice.
