Do you already own a gun or will this be your first purchase?

What do you recommend?
AR-15 or a tactical shotgun?

Both.

But in all seriousness. You say you own a firearm, what do you currently have? Are you comfortable shooting both shotguns and AR's? Is the primary purpose for home defense?

Get the AR.

Owned a "tactical" shotgun and ended up selling it. Nice to have 8+1 and a short barrel, but more of a luxury if anything else if you already have 2 shotguns. You could always buy a short barrel and tube extension, depending on the gun.

IMHO everyone should have an AR/AK in their collection (if not both). Fun to shoot. Great if SHTF. And solid option for home defense.

What's your budget?

Colt, Daniel Defense, or a Noveske.

I would say 16"

Also building your own is enjoyable if you like doing projects

OP, it looks like you don't have a semi-auto handgun. I would get one of those. Go to a reputable local gun store in your area and have them show you some good pistols. Glock, S&W, HK, and Walther are some of the better ones to get you started.

Sounds like you need proper semi automatic pistol to round out the collection. Do you prefer range shooting or something to carry?

Dude, Amen. I can't believe it took this long for someone to list it!

I would suggest a full sized 9mm. Polymer striker-fired double stack to be more specific...

Smith & Wesson M&P9
Ruger SR9
Walther PPQ
FN FNS9
HK VP9
Glock 17/19
Springfield XD

Just to name a few...

EDIT: I suggest a full sized gun if you don't plan on carrying concealed.
