What ammo (brand/grain) are y'all shooting at the range and for self defense?

Lake City, Winchester and Browning all come from the same factory and seems to be relatively well liked. Not the cleanest, but decent ammo. PMC X-Tac and Bronze seem to be decent options also. 55gr for those.

For SD, maybe Hornady Black or Federal Law Enforcement 62gr. I haven’t watched enough ballistic gel test on those rounds to give a definite recommendation.

These days, whatever’s cheapest. I refuse to pay more than .40 CPR for 223/556.

Black Hills 77gr TMK.

I load a clone for range ammo with TMK when I can find them, and SMK when I can't.

Whatever is cheapest. Just keep pitchin' till you win.

Have you ever shot an animal with yours?

I've killed numerous hogs with 55 grain 855 and 193.

Always stick to brass case. Steel in AR-15's is horrible.

For self defense I use IMI 77gr razorcore.

For blasting I use any brass that I have.

I don’t buy special self defense, home defense ammo. I have range ammo for my guns for any scenario. I don’t see spending 2x, 3x, 4x range ammo prices for self defense ammo. Gun goes pew, pew, pew. Hopefully I hit something in a self defense situation.

For the range i shoot norma tactical. I have a bunch of razorcore 77 (smk) because they are relatively cheap. I have a smaller amount of 77 tmks from unknown munitions for killing animals.

Still have a case of Geco for plinking.

I have a mix of HD stuff I’ve messed with. Black Hills, Hornady, Gold Dot, PPU OTMs, whatever. Fusion for hunting although I don’t hunt with it much anymore.

What's your load data and how close can you get to real Blck Hills in terms of groups snd velocity?

What makes Black Hills so good is that is very high pressure and velocity, but does not ruin your brass and groups like precision target round.

You can also get great results with 75g HPs from Hornady Black.

For self defense, availability and price drove me to the 62gr federal fusion.

The msr specifically is designed with faster burning powders for the shorter barrels of the platform so the muzzle velocity is much better.

It also seems to be a good choice for sbr so since I have both a 16” and 11.5” 556 setup the 62gr fusion msr was a winner

If you're in need of ammo, I happened to stumble across a potentially good deal.

Scheels has Fiocchi .223 (brass cased FMJ 55gr) for $44.99 a box of 100. That's $449.90 a case, which is already a decent price in today's market. And they ship with a flat rate, something decent I think.

Here's where it gets interesting- they're doing their "Visa promotion" right now. If you look into it on their site, you apply for their (crappy high interest) Visa, and if approved you can get up to $100 off your purchase.
I was looking at my cart, and it was saying there that my purchase would be $349.90 if I did the Visa thing.

THAT price for a case of name-brand brass ammo is GREAT now, and would be decent before the panic.
So, I tried... but I forgot: like a lot of other Louisiana people, I'm on a free year of Lifelock (with a credit freeze) after the DMV was hacked. It blocked their access to my credit (which is excellent), so they declined me.

Now, I have a few rounds of 223/556 stashed in ammo cans, so I wasn't that broken up about it. I don't know how to unfreeze to do the application, if it is easy I still might do it.

Y'all looking to get some, here's the link

I have 3 varieties from Black Hills. The 50gr TSX,77gr OTM, and 77gr TMK. Depending on which rifle I am shooting dictates which ammo I'm running.

Depends on your barrel length and twist rate. Im using 62gr. IMI defense green tip with a 16" .223 wylde and 1/8 twist.

The PSA AR-15 I have ordered has a 16" barrel with a 1 in 7" twist. I ordered 150 rounds of Winchester M885 Green Tips 62 grain ammo from BassPro. There was not a lot to choose from.

.223 55-grain FMJ at the range but special stash of FMJBT for any uninvited guests.

Well since you said AR and didn’t specify caliber,

The two that are used for home defense and plinking are:

Built an AR in 300 blackout and for home defense use Hornady 110 grain V-Max. As far as plinking, mostly my reloads or anything I can get my hands on. Still pretty expensive ammo for lots of shooting.

CMMG Banshee MK 17, in 9mm loaded with Speer Gold Dot. Plinking with this one is just about anything. Brass, steel, reloads, etc.

I’ll help you out. If shooting 556 you want to shoot 55 grain cheapest ammo possible for the range or “plinking” around. Use 62 grain and up for lethal rounds. Even though enough good shots with 55 grain will kill almost anything.

Look for bulk deals on 55gr online and at academy/cabellas. Buy 200+ rounds and get a metal ammo can. Fill it up over time. That’s your range/plinking rounds. Don’t store ammo in the mag. Keep in the can.

You can also shoot 223 in your 556 but I wouldn’t mix with 556 in a can. It could be potentially bad for the barrel.

I have a 556 and DO have 77 grain 223 for lethal rounds. I keep these in the box so they aren’t mixed.

Label your magazines with a marker so you don’t mix them up (lethal/ range/ 223 L/ 223 R.

Here’s the best prices you should look for that would be considered “deals” in Biden’s America:

556/223 55 gr ——> $0.50 - $0.65

556/223 62/72/77 gr ——> $1.10 - $1.41

*ask about tips and if the case is brass before buying.

*don’t forget to factor shipping/handling into your price per round. Lots of places will deduct S&H with a $250+ order.

Get ready to spend some money.

Welcome to the party pal.
