Yes. I have seen them many times and a few different species. I've even seen killer whales in the GOM twice. Whales aren't super common, but if you spend enough time out there, you will see some.

Of course....seen several pods over the decades...BP Marlin platform and the Thunderhorse platform. Helicopter rides in and out...anywhere around the shelf edge from time to time you catch them coming thru

Yes, on a tuna charter , not too far out prob 40 miles, pulled up within 15-20 feet of it and it gave us a show, got skunked on the tuna but the whale made the trip

Saw a pod a while back (10-12 yrs.). I think they told us they were sperm whales (insert sophomoric joke here)
ETA: The crew told us - not the whales.

Seen plenty of them out there. Couldnt tell you what species though, never got close enough to find out. My dad has an orca tooth that was passed down to him from his grandpa. Apparently his grandpa worked on a fishing boat in the gulf and an orca was tangled in there fishing net and had drowned. Sad story but he got a neat souvenier out of it. Also, at the audobon aquarium there is an old picture from the early 1900's of a small pod of orca whales in the mississippi river near new orleans. Really cool picture

Yes, I've seen them many times. We've seen whale sharks mostly. When we've seen them we were around the Spur, which is 60nm SSE of orange beach. Don't think I have see them when we went ssw towards the oil rigs and ms/la areas. we fish for tuna and other billfish.

They are awesome. A few years ago there was one fairly close in that a lot of people radio'd the location. It was, maybe, 20nm offshore. A lot of divers went out and swam with it; it was in that area for a few days. Really cool, I will try to find the AL.Com article.
