Anyone know anything about artificial fish habitats to attract fish?

I thought I would have a couple of years to research the topic but it looks like they are dropping the lake down for a couple of weeks in October/November. I've heard of people putting artificial fish habitat in the lake to help the fish population. Wouldn't mind doing that near my dock... you know.. because I love lots of fish in my cove :) Anyone ever done this? I have no idea where to start.

Bamboo cemented into a five gallon bucket. Tie stalks together when assembling then cut just before dropping in.

Same 5 gallon buckets with a pvc tree cemented into bucket. Longer lasting but not as effective as bamboo.

Seems like natural brush works better than artificial. Try bamboo in a 5 gallon bucket filled with concrete.

ETA: I've heard that fish cant really get in a christmas tree as well as other brush because the limbs are so close together. Plus, they are harder to sink IMO

Google "freshwater artificial reefs"

Mostly 5 gallon buckets with cement and pvc tree like structures. Some use old plastic pallets. Lots of articles on LA sportsman as well.

An IRL person I talked with a while back mention putting his habitats out when the lake was down. But the cement bucket thing looks like they can be placed at any time. Will be nice to get some eyeballs on the lake bottom though. Can you have too many in one spot? Or are just a couple enough.

I don't know much about fishing but with the place on the lake I plan on learning.

Tons of videos out on the web. As others said, the 5 gallon bucket with tubing or PVC coming off of it seems to be the standard.

We always did Christmas trees. Catfish like actual cavelike structures, barrels and such. The problem with those is getting your lure into the structure when they're on the beds. We used to have a rip rap retaining wall that big cats would come up and spawn in the "caves" right on our shoreline. Used to put some big nasty soft plastic on a fly rod and aggravate the hell out of them cane pole style until they'd take. Catching an 8 lb. cat on a 6 weight is pretty fun.

basically, anything structural that provides cover will do it...

I would put something made of PVC out...lasts a lot longer and you can fish it without getting hung up so much...

fwiw, another old trick is to fill a grass sack with dog food and sink that...

Now that I know the term "artificial reef" to Google I'm coming up with a lot of good info now.

Use a large pvc pipe as your stalk, wedge it through wooden pallets. Submerge.

We cement them in buckets like your bamboo, then cut limbs out to resolve that problem. But that bamboo deal looks pretty damn sweet

Good thing with PVC is that your lure won't get hung up

Get an 8' section of 4" PVC pipe and two end caps. Glue an end cap on one end and drill 6-10 small holes in the last ~8" of the capped end. Sink the capped end ~5 feet and attach to dock with hanger strap. Fill with dog food and cap the top end without glue. Fill as needed. Catch many White Sac-a-crappy.

That's diabolical.

5 gallon bucket with PVC sticking out is what we have used. USe sandpaper to rough up the surface of the pvc. This helps mor algea attach = more bait fish = more bigger fish.

With the Christmas tree, we have always cut section of branches out to make holes to increase habitat. You can either weight them down and sink away from the dock or attach a line to the dock, add tree, cinder block weight on other end of tree and then suspend the tree vertically.

I did the bamboo in the bucket in my pond. We have a really long stretch of clumping bamboo as a property boundary at work, as well as a cutter attachment for the tractor to trim it.

If anyone needs bamboo for this, I'm about to do my annual trimming in the next week or so. Come get all you need.

The best part about a lake being drawn down is you get to see OTHER PEOPLE'S structures not put out your own.
