Anyone know about Solar Panels

So, my electricity goes off quite often, but only for an hour or two most of the time. I would be fine with that, but my wife works from home and if her internet goes down for that long, she has to go into the office.
What would be the possibility of getting a couple solar panels on the roof to run the TV, PC, router full time?
First, is it even feasible? secondly, how many watts/what components would i need?
Just wanting to learn a little bit. I going to assume it would be easier just to get a generator, but i dont want her trying to crank a generator and cut off breakers that wouldnt be used.
dumb idea?

Thinking of doing this at my camp. Interested as well.

As I understand it, the cost is in the batteries not the solar panels.
You need a generator with an automatic switch.
ETA: an automatic switch will crank the generator and switch the panel to generator power when there is a loss of power.

Call the power co. and ask them to trim some trees. I'd say generator, my friend ran freezers and a window unit on one of those tiny Honda e2000??? during Gustav. damn thing sips gas.

you need to think in terms of amps...
total your amps of each appliance to get your load
solar is 12V, so in addition to the panels you need an inverter a charge controller and a battery bank.
by the time you do all that you could have bought a nice honda generator.

oh thats definitely the number 1 option at the moment, but im not really interested in spending $3-5k on a standby, just for maybe an hour or two a month.
Was hoping the solar panels would be a cheaper, less invasive option. But i presume that is not the case.
I've got a pretty large inverter already. hell, i might just keep a battery charged at the house and let her plug into that.

Good UPS battery backup will take care of the computer demand. Much cheaper and less maintenance.

i read about these a long time ago. About how long could the backup power last?

Good ones are $$$. I had one a while ago that had enough juice for around 20 minutes of run time

I'd go study up on the state tax credit program that the legislature killed after hundreds of people installed solar panels.
State tax credit was supposed to cover 1000's of dollars of costs for the average installation -- then the legislature killed the program and shafted all those people. Class action lawsuits have been filed --- no resolution in sight.
I'd wait until something is resolved.

If losing power regularly, you could do a gas generator. The gas company pay will hook it to your gas line and when your power goes, it kicks on. My folks have one that powers their house even during tropical storms and hurricanes they still have power.

I understood that those are not for reserve power; rather, rollback on meter.

quote:I know that my parents got them 2 years ago and were only supposed to come out of pocket for like $1000 thanks to all of the tax credits they were supposed to get. They got their federal tax credits but Louisiana reneged on them even though they had them installed prior to the deadline and followed the correct protocol. They ended up having to come out of pocket around $12,000

Who did they shaft? There was months of advance notice of the star portion of that credit being done away with. The only ones that benefitted from that bullshite credit was the installers anyway. Taxpayer fukt over again and again.

Sounds like you need a generator.

Yeah most likely right. That's probably what I'll do...just got to explore all options.

Honestly, the money you need to invest upfront vs how long it takes to get your money back isn't really worth the investment for something like that.

All you need is a small generator and a lon enough extension cord to run from the generator outside to your wife's workstation area. Get a small ups that'll run for 20-30 minutes, unplug it and plug into the extension when the gen is running. That'll all be cheaper than solar or a large enough UPS to run everything for 2 hours.

Solar panel reduce the life of your roof. You need to buy a a back up battery for the computer for 30 minutes and a push start generator she can drag an extension cord to.
Solar panels are great in theory but poor in application anywhere that isn't a solar farm in the desert.

I recently put solar panels on our camp. If you already have a power inverter rig it up to a couple of batteries. I bought three 12 watt solar panels. I tied the panels in together and connected them to 2 batteries. I am able to run lights and fans all night long with no problem. I have never ran the juice out of the batteries yet, but don't go to the camp nearly enough. If you run out of battery, you can either add more solar panels or charge the battery when your power comes back on.
Or you can order this kit off of sportsman guide.
