I'm looking at possibly planting an olive tree or two in the front yard. Personally I think they look cool, and I actually want to brine and eat the olives if it produces. From what I understand they will do fine with the temperatures in SELA but I'm concerned about them getting disease from the moisture & rain. Does anyone have any experience with them in this area?

The Baton Rouge master gardeners have a sale every spring at the Rural Life museum and there is a lady there sells them. I bet if you contact them they can point you in her direction. You need to keep them in a pot and plant and cover in cold weather. We bought one, but it didn;t make it .

I planted 2 a couple months ago. They seem to be doing ok, survived all this rain. I do have them on high ground that really drains well. I just hope we don't get a bitter winter.

How cold did it get? What I've been reading is that most varieties are hardy down to 15°.

They should do ok here. I Thought I read somewhere the D.W.L.& F. was going to plant some.
I grew up in So. California(foothills east of San Diego) and a section street we lived on was lined with olive tree. Every few years there would be a crew harvesting them.
The trees seem to be hardy but they are also very messy.
