I have an xpress and i am thinking about having it repainted. I just don't know what to expect cost wise. I obviously don't want to spend a lot of money on repainting something that you don't notice that much. There are some scratches and paint fading there and i want so badly for it to be nice and clean haha.

Just curious on cost or if anyone has done it themselves.

TIA

I've painted the interior of my old fiberglass boat. A lot of prep sanding. Bought some paint from West Marine to do it with. Turned out great. Aluminium should be far easier to paint. Just a light sanding and spray it on.

Yeah, i am talking the exterior though.

I would only want the blue portion painted. That is all i am really worried about. You can't tell but its pretty scratched up. I wanted to maybe sand down the blue portion repaint, seal, and see if i can order new decals from xpress.

Give Bruno at Burbank Body Shop a call. Great guy. If I had to guess $200 if just painting that blue part. The whole hull would be closer to $1,000.

I'll give him a call. I kinda want to give it a shot myself, but i don't want it to look worse than it was before.

Stan Harris in Prairieville does bang up work. My paint job is 8 years old now and still has the same mirror finish that it did when it left his shop (bottom pic).

Had an old stratos bass boat done years ago. Knew a lot of the guys at custom colors body shop in industriplex and had it done on the side. I sanded and wet sanded it all down myself to save on labor. Turned out great. Sold it for more than I paid for it when I was ready to upgrade.

If you have a compressor and a spray gun, your 90% there as long as you don't sand down to bare aluminum. Just scuff the paint that's on there w 400 grit and spray it. Automotive single stage urethane paint is what you'd want to use.

ETA: Stan does great work. If I remember correctly, he bought Imron from me to use on that boat.

No, you're maybe 10% there. You need a large compressor pushing a lot of CFM to shoot paint. That's at least 1K right there. Most of the good tough paint you shoot for boats is extremely toxic. Add a forced air respirator system (another 1K), a booth or boothing your garage with proper circulation, paint, thinner, sand paper, tools such as sanders, buffers, paint gun, cleaning supplies and most importantly your time tackling the learning curve and the enormous amount of prep. You don't just shoot paint and it turn out perfect. If your prep isn't perfect the finished product will look like shite. If this is a one time deal for you it is cheaper and safer to pay someone else than for you to get geared up and spend all the time.

There it is.

What y'all don't know about Ring's boat is that he (yes he) completely rebuilt that boat. Pretty much everything. I wish I could remember the website that he documented the entire process. It is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen. Really just incredible.

Oh yeah that's like an 80s or 90s something Mako.

Thanks to all. Its a 1993 hull. Motors are 2005 Optimaxs. I'm hoping to repower with new or 1-2 year old 250 opti's in a year or so.

I do much of my own painting. Mainly small projects. Painting a boat is something that requires a shop into which the boat fits...

The rebuild is chronicled at a little web forum (classicmako.com)that I happen to own/moderate.

Thanks for linking the thread. I'll probably spend the next couple of days reading through it again.

Epic rebuild. That takes more time and skill than most people have.
