I've always wanted one with all wood, but every time I decide to get one I end up with another AR.

One of the rifles features a curved, banana-style high-capacity magazine with 30 rounds.

Thanks for pointing that out CNN.

Picked up my first one recently. First assault rifle i've had since the one that was issued to me in the military. Enjoying the hell out of it.

The "AR" in all ArmaLite pattern firearms simply stands for ArmaLite, and can be found on most of the company's firearms: AR-5, a .22 caliber rifle; the AR-7, another .22 caliber; the AR-17 shotgun; the AR-10 rifle; and the AR-24 pistol.

From the website: "Kalashnikov USA announced on Tuesday that it is now selling AK-47 assault rifles and shotguns that have been manufactured at a U.S. factory."

AK = Avtomat Kalashnikova (Automatic Kalashnikov)

But you gotta love that 30 round banana clip, it wouldn't be an AK without it.

As far as broad terms go, if it's not an assault rifle then what is it?

Sporting rifle. I've got an assault fork I stabbed somebody in the neck with one time but the rest of my forks are dinner forks

Fair enough. I've never heard them referred to as that through out my personal life or time in the Army. I really don't care enough to argue about it though.

Actually "Sporting Rifle" is a political term we should not be encouraging either. This was coined by NSSF to try to make up a term which would be more palatable to Gun Muggels who confused these rifles for fully automatic machine guns while also trying to make the excuse that they serve some "Sporting Purpose" per the 1968 GCA and more recent import bans.
These are common semiautomatic rifles which, while sometimes being based on designs used by various militaries, are suitable for use by average citizens for the role of defense of home, community and country. There is no reason to be ashamed or apologetic for being a responsible citizen who has decided to arm him/herself with a modern weapon which can be used in a time of crisis.
Unless we are referring to a purpose built competition model race gun, any "sporting purposes" of these rifle are secondary to their design and function.
To describe these rifles I prefer using terms such as Personal Defense Rifle, Citizen Response Rifle or, as the popo like to call them, Patrol Rifles.

And this is how Political Correctness is born - people trying to control our language for us.

I like to be able to turn to my friend and say, "Let's go shoot the AKs in the bafon. Don't forget the clips." and he knows EXACTLY what I mean. No one gets their panties bunched up over words they don't like hearing. (AK meaning Automatic Kalashnikov)

What I'm NOT going to say is, "Let's go shoot the Citizen Response Rifles on the back 40. Don't forget the detachable magazines."

I know people like to think Political Correctness only comes from liberals, but it comes from BOTH sides. And I don't care for either flavor.
