I have painted stocks/handguards for M1A's. Of course, when you tire of that you can just slap on a walnut or black stock whenever. Done well the rifle can look great. If you want to do, go ahead.

I've spray painted a number of rifle stocks and a Savage Striker handgun using "trunk paint." Here's the Striker.
This summer I redid an XP-100 handgun using spray cans of camo paint on the stock and "Aluma-Hyde II" from Brownells on the metal. Here are the before and after pics.
