I've got a couple Chapmans that the wood has rotted and needs to be replaced. I went and picked up the new vinyl rails to install a couple weeks ago. My problem is the epoxy glue they used on the wood rails, it's a PITA to remove. Anyone have any suggestions other than lots of time and elbow grease?

Bring it back to Ron Champan. They know all of their pirogues and will do it for a nominal fee. He's located in Chalmette.

They had some done when i went to pick up the rails. I think it's going to solve the problems I had with them. Definitely going to stiffen it up and eliminate a lot of the cracks that occurred from snatching them by one side.

I contacted Chapman about replacement rails for my pirogue. I was told to look locally--I interpreted their response as go away and leave them alone.

YMMV, good luck.

I recently "inherited" a 15'4" Gheenoe and the top rails are smashed and unusable. Gheenoe says they have no way of shipping new rails to me. I would like to know your source for the rails you mentioned in your post. Any other Obers that have a source for similar material will be welcome also.

Capt. you will LOVE the rubber rails. I just put some on one of my 16' and they are nice. Before I would make my own rails out of wood and glue them on. This is much easier, of course I've only had them about 3 weeks on one boat so I can't speak to longevity but it seems the way to go to me.

Thanks for the advice of picking the rails up from Chapman to retrofit my Gheenoe. The gentleman I spoke with at Chapman (I think his last name was Gerace), said that the synthetic rails that Chapman is now using on their porgies, are the same as what Gheenoe uses.
