I'm drawing up a set of terms for the guide to agree to for a hunt in South Texas. I want to make sure that I am not being taken for a ride. I'm covering all the basics (the land is private, our group will be the only group hunting this ranch while we're there, you know there to be deer on the property and can assure at least a shot opportunity, etc.)

I googled "Outfitter Scams" and man there are some stories out there that would REALLY piss me off.

Anybody ever been scammed by a guide? Pay for a hunt and get taken to public land? Have the guide get drunk and forget to pick you up from your stand? Lets hear your stories.

Where is the ranch located and does it have a name?

I wouldn't think this would be a problem down there.

This happened to me on a duck hunt in Arkansas...

It actually worked out because we killed some ducks and I went back to the general spot/area quite a few times over the next few years and had some good hunts.

I have had two hard core scams pulled on me. Once on a turkey hunt in Wyoming and once on a deer hunt in Illinois. They were both really big operations with impressive Web sites. Both were total scams and we ended up leaving within 24 hours.

Of course, I have also had some great experiences. It's really hard to tell just by reviews on the internet. You have to drill down and get lots of things in writing.

Its supposed to be near some place called Tilden, TX. They have some big deer there. The guide sent me a picture of a big deer somebody killed out there two weeks ago. It was a mainframe 9 with a bunch of stickers and one drop tine. I'm gonna say it grossed mid 150s.

It really sounds like you're drawing up a contract for the guide to sign. If so you're about to get laughed off that ranch at least. Do some research on the guide service before booking. But don't pull some commie crap like bringing a halfass contract and expect a guide to sign it. Those guys don't make a lot of money so they aren't gonna deal with a lot of bs. The outfitter probably isn't going to be very welcoming of it either

That would be the equivalent of them asking you to sign one saying you will guarantee not to wound any animal

Nobody can assure or guarantee that.

I always hate seeing these threads. Way too many horror stories out there. Makes a guy very very leery of booking any kind of hunt. There's some real jacklegs out there that just wanna separate us from our money

I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm drawing up some halfassed contract just like all of those communists draw up before they pay for a hunting trip. We all know how commies are about their sporting legal documents.

I'm getting the guide to acknowledge certain verbal agreements in writing. I'm not asking him to sign anything, I'm asking him to confirm some things on email. I sincerely doubt that he'll laugh me off of anything and if he cant confirm something as simple as meals will be covered and they'll handle the skinning and cleaning, then our group will take our hunt elsewhere.

There are enough resources out there to find reputable guides. I'd never book any kind of trip without finding online reviews or personal references.

I was scammed on some teal hunt a few years ago. Paid a deposit and never was able to make the hunt...Supposedly the guy was in a bad accident and had to give up guiding to take care of his wife....

Hunt with a reputable outfitter , and if the deal sounds too good to be true it probably is .

See what I'm getting at? Not trying to be a hardass man but that's how it looks. A simple phone call to ask them about all that should help ease your mind somewhat

I hear you bud, but google outfitter scams and see just how many people thought they were good with just a phone call. In fairness, some of those guys were just plain suckers. A Pike County, Illinois deer hunt for a flat 1500 is a bit shady on its face.

Yeah... I'd warn anyone posting in this thread to give the facts and not get carried away.
