Any public land that's suitable for plinking?

My son (8) has been in love with firearms as long as he's been old enough to hold them. He's shot my AR-15 and handled it just fine, he's since been whining to shoot my 9mm Shield, which I think is a bit much for him. I'd like to get him a. 22lr pistol and take him shooting and would love to be able to set up some reactive targets (coke bottles, etc) but don't own any land. Are there any places around BR that I could take him to shoot and have some fun doing it? Don't mind paying but thought there might be some public land that's suitable for this type of thing.

You can go to the shooting range at Sherburne, but I not sure what targets can be shot...

Honey Island has an awesome range

Precision has a plate rack + several other steel reactive targets.
$15 per day per shooter.
I haven't shot at Nick's (in Garyville) in several years. Back then it was OK to set up plastic coke bottles and shoot them. He also had a plate rack, although most people were content to shoot paper targets.

We used to just go south of lsu a ways on river road until we were at least a mile from anything and would go shoot on the river side of the levee.

"Any public land where I can go teach my son to litter?"
(Haha. Just a joke, I'm sure you'd pick up your trash and brass.)

Is that legal? If so, I'd definitely take him there. And, yes, I'd pick up everything we brought.

I don't know..we usually shot skeet from a hand thrower. I think for someone to find you they would have to be driving a boat on the river and call the cops...there are places on the levee with nothing but farmland anywhere close.

I used to bring my steel targets there until one day they bitched about ricochet over the top of the berm. I wish they understood physics to actually realize what they thought was happening is ridiculous. None of my targets have ricochet issues anyway.
Never been to Honey Island but have heard good things. I've found the best for me is to hope a friend with land doesn't mind taking me out to go shooting. The closest land I can go to without having to have "supervision" with me is in Woodville, MS, so it's a hell of a drive.
And as to your son, I would definitely say to start him on a larger handgun first. After he does well on the 22 I think you could step him up to a full sized 9mm. A full sized gun is always easier to shoot than a tiny one. Once he learns to manage recoil properly, then he can move on to the tiny guns. I would also advise you put one round in the magazine at a time while he is getting the movements and muscle memory down.
Hope it goes well.

Sherburne is probably your best bet for around here. You can shoot coke bottles but that's about your only target option besides paper. You should look into getting the M&P .22 compact pistol for your son. It's designed to be the same size/ feel of the shield just in .22lr. It would also be a cheap way for you to practice with a gun similar to what you carry.

In Louisiana it's called Criminal Trespass.
Check out La. Revised Statute 14:63:
§63. Criminal trespass
B. No person shall enter upon immovable property owned by another without express, legal, or implied authorization
Having law enforcement show up and remove you from the property is not a good way to introduce an 8 year old to shooting.
