I have a world champion English cream Golden Retriever and was told I couldn't breed him so we got him neutered.

Don't want any mixed breed dogs anyway

I got my female golden retriever neutered at 7 months. Don't have breeding rights, which made the decision a little easier, but I was also told that if you get the goldens spayed before their first heat that the chance of cancer goes way down.

Thats true for mammary tumors; the theory is that all the torn cruciates and some of the hip/shoulder/elbow dysplasias were pepretuated in some part by neuter/sap too early. What that time is, is unknown

This thread had me search the google machine yesterday. I just put a deposit down on a male GR so wanted to see what the consensus was for neutering. Most answers I came across is that GR males neutered too early can have increased risk of bone & joint problems and possible fatal cancers by up to 25%

Most articles I read said to wait for the 1-1.5 yr range. These were specific to GR and it mentioned that labs, while similar, don't necessarily follow in these same percentages.

My lab took a leak on my mothers curtains when he was about 1.5 yrs old and started thinking he was hot shite.

I wrapped my belt around his arse about 10 times and that was the last time that ever happened.

I've heard the same but it's later than your time range. The dogs are still developing then.

I was always told either whack the balls at 6 months or 4 years. Anything in between and you run the risk of messing with the dogs mental and physical development.

ETA: my BLM is 3.5 and will be getting the snips next summer or fall.

Pros, he quit marking in the house.

Cons, couldn't breed him when someone said they wanted to get a litter off of him, still humps the dogbed like he did before he was ball-less.

He's still very hyper for a 3 year old, still can't put weight on him, when he pointed that pheasant in SoDak he turned into a bird dog, only gets anxiety and depression when I'm out of sight and he knows I'm around.

Proper training can eliminate marking. My dog isn't neutered and he has never marked in the house.

Well, made the appointment for the morning. Talked with a few guys including my vet who know dogs well that told me it's the right thing to do in my situation.

they cant mark in the house if you keep them out of the house.

My lab stays filthy so he doesn't get to come inside. If he is not swimming he is rolling in shite so its outside the house and back of the truck for him.

I haven't cut his nuts yet though, aint found a set of loppers big enough. Bochepus got a set on him.

Not saying this isn't true, but when the dog marks on your less than a year old child in front of your wife, there are consequences.

I don't regret it, but I had no intentions on being a breeding him, just had someone ask because he's a good looking dog.

I will never cut another of my dogs. Completely changed the manner and demeanor of my lab. Made him aggressive as well and act very strange at times.
