Hes well behaved with me but he's starting to mark a lot and I'm short on options. Just want to do what's best for the both of us.

cons: You can't breed in the future if that is a consideration...

I found at when he was 1 that he had a genetic defect. His pallet in his mouth formed right before birth. he could have had a cleft pallet. So, we neutered him.

I ain't going to lie. His nick-name was violator before we fixed him. He's chill now, but his prey drive didn't fall off at all.

What would be the cons if you aren't going to breed him?

That's why I'm asking. Weight gain, drive loss, depression, etc.

Fine as long as he is older than 18 months. Any younger and you're losing valuable testosterone for growth/hormones. Vets are either idiots about this or don't give a shite and try to squeeze for money because they almost always try to pressure you to neuter way too early. I had to tell them 3 different times not to neuter my MBL who is now 7 months old

We chose not to neuter our 2.5 year old lab. He marks on a lot on walks, but he is pretty calm and does well in our small apartment. However, if he was crazy and marking in the house, snip.

I haven't noticed any of that in my GSP. If anything, he is more focused when hunting.

Same thing would happen to you if you had your balls cut off.

When I had our older lab neutered around age 2 he spent a week not looking at me and moping around. He did gain weight. My pup is 9 months and I don't think I'm going to neuter him unless he gets unruly.

As dirtymike pointed out, there are benefits to waiting to neuter or spay. Current idea is that the time that the growth plates close (10-14 months for a variety of breeds) is the magic time when neutering can be done and not have detrimental damage to the joints or other risks
UC Davis study 2013

Extremely dependent on breed!

I 100% agree and I would wait until after 2.

Would wait until 2 also but if no plans to breed would get him clipped then and not delay no benefit to waiting. Especially if a bitch comes into heat within a mile of your house or even worse at the boat ramp one day
